To start or not to start?
I've read hundreds of posts with no real conclusive decision. Should I start my '83 911SC 3.0 monthly or so durring the storage of my car over the winter? I would start it and let it come up to operating temp, then shut it down, without driving the car out of the storage garage, adequate ventilation, door will be open. Or should I just let it set the 3-4 months without starting it. Worried about seals, condensation, etc. Just don't know the which is the best for the car, Any advice?

If at all possible drive it around the block or at least a few miles getting it up to temp.
If you can't do that or maybe the roads are not clear, just leave it alone. Disconnect your battery, of course. My .02.

I agree w/ Wayne. If you can't actually get it on the road and get it up to temp, just park it. Put fuel stabilizer in and use a battery tender or disconnect the battery altogether. If I had AC I would run it before putting it away, and then first thing come spring. If I did drive the car, I would run the AC.

Good point on the AC, Paul.
I don't have it so that's not one of my concerns. ![]() I do run it in the winter a few times in my other cars, however. Keeps the seals lubed up.

I always store my cars and never start them over the winter.
Starting it will generate TONNES of condensation and fluid in the exhaust system. Then it will sit there when you stop the car. It may also have thicker oil in it and you don't want to start it in super cold temperatures anyway. I just cover and call it a season till next year after changing the oil , adding the stabil and topping up the tank. |
