3.6 conversion check engine light
my conversion is almost complete. I thank all those pelicans and Dr. Timmins for providing assistance and support so far.
for those did the conversion, how did you set up check engine light? I'm thinking using the seat belt light. I would like to collect examples of those who have check engine light on 89 or earlier vehicles. many thanks... |
I swapped 964/993 gauges into my '74 - I like the readability and the much better illumination a lot. As a plus I didn't have to swap any sending units on the engine. The orange CEL is in the oil pressure/temperature gauge. Not exactly what you are looking for but I thought I'd share anyway.

Mine is the same.....the SC Gauges were less than accurate.
My speedo was off by 12%. It's dead nutz on now. The 964 gauges were the best upgrade...besides the engine.....good bang for the buck. After selling the SC gauges I was in it for realitively low dollars. |
great idea. Thanks for sharing.
who has extra 964/993 gauges? what other ideas? |
I got mine on evilBay. You could also post a want to buy ad in the classifieds.
|
I have SC gauges. My OXY light is now the CEL.

In principle you can make any light that is operated by 12 volts into the CEL. If you like your current gauges you could ask North Hollywood Speedometer to built an LED into the speedo or oil gauge.
There was a guy in the classifieds who is parting out a '90 C4 yesterday. Ask him about the gauges if you are looking for 964 style gauges. One thing to keep in mind is that the CEL is not a critical error of the engine that requires you to stop immediately. So there is no need to have a very prominent red light such as the oil pressure warning light. The CEL helps for diagnostics (flashing out DME fault codes). Other than that it rarely has any use on a 964. There are no many faults that trigger it while the engine runs fine. |
Well...YOU DO need a CEL if you need to have a BAR approval for the engine swap. Ingo has a 74 so he's exempt in CA. Mine is an 83 and needs that light and a cat to be legal.

I'm in Oregon and when I passed the 84 thru DEQ they just stuck a probe in to the exhaust and CEL existence was never a question so any form of CEL should work for me.
I totally agree with ischmitz comment about CEL not being critical instrument. I also want to be minimalist and simplistic as possible. At the same time I wanted to be within socially acceptable range where being a pelican requires to be non-ghetto or not excessively cheap...yes? ;-) I am thinking either tapping the OXY or seat belt or just have an orange bulb screwed somewhere down the dash... thanks for the ideas guys. 964/993 gauges...some day...some day... |
ended up with placing a bulb in the center console.
