Is this 1 of the oil plugs?

http://www.sbtraveler.tv/porsche/oil_plug1.jpg

87' 911 Turbo.

Before I warm the engine up to drain the oil for the first time I crawled under to identify the 2 locations where the oil drains are. The one on the side (Oil Tank) matched up with 101 Projects book perfectly but the other one did not. The photo showed the drain plug on a flat plate (Sump plate I think) But I could not find that? I did find a plug which I thought is the drain plug.

Can someone please let me know if that is the one before I warm the car up and start burning myself crawling under there? I am guessing the book is correct about everything else except the location of my drain plug for my model year car.

The plug should be magnetic. After you fish it out of the oil pan (), look to see if there are any major metal bits stuck to it.

I owe an apology to Wayne for the Projects 101 book. I re read the section for oil change and he does make mention that in the 83' models and above the oil plug in the center changed. I was looking at the photos and not paying enough attention to the words.

Sorry.

Without a doubt the most important part of an oil change, which I almost forgot last year, is to fill up with new oil..

I had buttoned everything up and came as far as almost turning the key when it occurred to me. Whoooops! Talk about a "near bankruptcy experience"!

Probably still cleaning up the Valdez spill . Markus, you're too funny, it's not an oil "change" untill you put some back in! I've had my "moment" too. I was doing a bunch of stuff at the time, and didn't tighten my filter all the way (figuring I'd get it later). Backing out of the garage, hmm...why is there a 4' puddle and a trail of oil following me .

You may not realize this, but there are (3) oil drain plugs on a turbo model.

The sump tank under the turbo has a drain plug w washer.

You should replace the crush washers on each drain plug each time you change the oil.

As long as its there, may as well get as much dirty oil out as possible.

I would like to see one up front at the oil cooler too, but its not available from Porsche.

Len

Edit: Not Joking. This should be in Waynes book as well.

I didn't do it yesterday. I ran out of time before the thanksgiving diner. It will happen today!

BoxterGT. please tell me you are joking about the 3rd oil plug. This is the first I have heard of this.

It's a joke or something I don;t have to worry about, right?

You might be thinking of a different Lars. My mother bought it in 87' in 88' with 12,000 miles on it. When she died she left it to me about 3 years ago.

Hey Mike. I am up here in Solvang... I am not much of a bar guy but it is nice to know that I have someone right down the hill that can come by if I have a problem.

Have you ever removed the engine from your car?

He also is flaunting imminent death (according to a certain pelican in AZ) by hooking a trailer to a 911!
