coil on a 77 targa

I am working on a friends 911, the car was towed to me. Its suppose to run but run bad, i been on this site for about 2weeks finding out about these cars and i have learned so much here, this is a very good site and you guys are really a great help thanks. Now back to the car i notice the air box was damaged and i havent even tryed to start the car but looking over it i noticed that there was something weird with the coil wires. Someone put a jumper wire between the two wires going to the coil, i dont know why they did this and never heard of this. does anyone know why this would be done, i alway thought one side was a hot the other a ground. Thanks
