71T wont start checklist???? help
 

I added PMO fuel bars to my webers today. Car sputtered, then started and idled great for 10 min. I closed the engine cover, got in for a test drive, and the car died and Just cranks but wont start. I know it sounds like a fuel problem with the work I did but i think its electric. I see fuel squirting into the carbs. Can someone give me a checklist to go through?????? I've never had electric problems.

Pull a spark plug wire and insert a screwdriver into the end holding the shaft of the SD very close to a ground point and far away from the carbs. Have the air cleaner(s) on if possible. Have someone turn it over just a few revs. You should see and hear spark. Be careful, the engine could start and the 'someone' needs to turn it off and you need to have your hands in a safe place at all times.

Now if there's no spark, we can narrow that down to points or CDI. There is a way to bypass the CDI, but let's not go there yet.

Better, yet, check all wires. It's real easy to dislodge one while doing anything in the tight quarters. Many have simply found a wire off the side of the distributor.

the last thing I can think of is dirt in the rails is now in the carbs, but you say there's fuel present. So, you should at least get some response from the engine.

So tell us what happened?

Would the 10 minutes of run time used all the fuel in the bowls? Can you verify that you've free flow at the point where the gas enters the carbs?

Im embarrassed to say it was the small wire on the dist cap - Damn it!!! :)

Milt, I'm stuck again. The car ahas been running great and today I replaced the plugs and wires. I also have all the parts for the dist tune up. After replacing the plugs and wires, she ran great for 30 min on a country road. I pulled back into the garage and let it continue to run for 10 min because my battery was dead in the moring so I thought i let it run a bit longer. It then just died as before when the small wire fell off the cap. It cranks, but does not start. I stuck the screwdriver in the end of a plug end while the engine cranked and no spark???? I also put the old coil wire back on to see if that made a difference but nothing. Would would I check next???, Coil wire???

Sorry, I can never remember the specs on the Ts. I know the 911S had MFI (I have a 1971 911S). When I disconnected the ugly "cold start" fuel injector lines from the fuel console, the car would not start, even on warm sunny days here in southern California. Richening the mixture in other ways through the MFI pump or throttles did not help.

Do you have any "cold start" choke system? That very small squirt of fuel makes a surprising impact on starting performance.

Thanks but not mfi. Pretty confident its electric but the way it cut off so quick. After reading a lot of posts from points to cd box, I think ill buy a new coil to check it off the list.just seems odd points or coil just happen to go after new plugs and wires.

The haynes manual has a way to check to see if the coil is bad by checking the resistance.

An easy way to see if you have spark is to hook up a timing light and see it you get a pulsed light.

Is your CD box whining?

Anyone know the resistance for the coil?

Resistance should be 0.4 to 0.6 ohms between terminals 1(-) & 15(+) and 650 to 790 ohms between 1(-) and 4(dist.wire term.)
