AC -vs- more hp?
Gents, I realize if I remove my AC unit from my 1987 3.2 Targa I can get more hp,s by removing the weight. But living in Florida its 80 today, two days after Thanksgiving. Would I benefit any by just removing the belt?

You'd add a little bit of power by not having to drive the a/c unit.. maybe 2 - 5 hp. And really, just removing the compressor isn't going to save you that much weight. You need to remove all of the A/C system to really get a nice weight savings imo.

2-5 hp might be worth the belt removal from time to time.

If the compressor clutch is not energized (A/C is switched off) the turning belt and pulley is using a trivial amount of horsepower (not 3 to 5); you will not be able to tell a difference removing the belt. If the belt is removed there is a very slight chance of brinelling damage to the A/C compressor pulley bearing due to the bearing not being turned over.

You have an A/C in in 80s 911 that works? That's a miracle right there. They sucked when new.

Thats half the problem, it works great. I hate to remove something that works, AC here is a must even during the so called winter. But thanks guys.

Keep in mind that if you don't run the AC once in a while you will end up with seals drying up (think compressor) and possibly losing R12 if you haven't replaced the stock hoses with barrier hoses. Is 1-2 HP worth it when you have to start replacing stuff?

Don't be silly, leave your car alone, run your AC for a few minutes at least once a month to keep it going, don't junk up your car by doing goofy things like taking the AC belt off. The AC should work fine on an 87.
