Help A Fellow Pelican...

OK, it's not what you think, and probably is a better subject for OT, but here in Western Illinois a lone white pelican was recently rescued, it apparently could not join its buddies in migrating south due to an injured wing. Well, some local animal rescue experts are rehabilitating it inside a volunteer's garage and it hopefully will be able to be released in the spring when the flock comes back through on its way up north to summer fishing habitat.
Meanwhile, the hungry pelican is going through about three pounds of minnows a day and donations are being accepted for it's care during rehabilitation.

The story can be read at www.qctimes.com.

Flocks of hundreds of these birds come through twice a year as they migrate. They really are quite a sight and a fine-looking bird.

The pelicans start their southward migration about the same time that bald eagles are working their way down the Mississippi river valley. It's not unusual to see many of both in backwater pools of the river; pelicans in the water and the eagles in the trees. Once winter is in full force the trees are full of eagles, I sometimes see a hundred or more perched up high as I commute to work over the Arsenal bridge.

I dig birds. Some think it's dorky but I think they are cool.

Gogar,
That video is one of the funniest things i've ever seen!!! Maybe that is why Wayne picked the Pelican, its calm and unassuming but will turn and eat you alive if you get it its way!

The story goes, as I've heard it, that Wayne and Tom were considering names when a pelican flew by. This comes from Scott at PP. Simple as that.

Kinda like a Bob Dylan song, you can read more into if you wish.

They have a fund set up at a Wells Fargo. It would be really cool if we could somehow pool some money under the Pelican Parts name and send it along. PP would possibly get a charity deduction and some publicity. The bird would get its food.

Yup, that's *basically* it. We tried for about 10 hours to come up with different names, and then a Pelican flew overhead, we called it, and went home.

I dropped off my $10 donation at the bank right before lunch. The gal there said donations had been trickling in all morning and they had about 80 bucks so far. I'm not sure what that is in minnows.

Donations can be sent to:

Pelican Fund
Wells Fargo Bank
1800 30th Street
Rock Island IL 61201

Maybe a couple Pelican T-shirts sent to the volunteers would be cheap publicity, eh, Wayne?
