When I need that extra oomph to get to the state line to avoid capture by the police. Just like in the movies they have to slam on the brakes and stop when they reach the border.

Mine doesn't like anything below 3K RPMs for it's relative gear...

..just get proper gear for relevant speed.......I NEVER lug this engine/G50 tranny.

On the way to work (interstate), if I'm running 75-85 MPH, I'm usually in 5th for cruise purposes....if hauling arse, then she'll see much more rev before engaging 5th..

...did I mention that I NEVER lug this engine/tranny?

Best,

Doyle

When I run through the gears, I redline in 4th a little over 100 mph. I settle down into 5th and cruise the freeway at 3500 going 70 mph. I was thinking about swapping in the next lower 5th gear so I turn 3100 at 70 but I'm not sure I want to do that.

I'm curious what lugging the engine does to a tranny?

I always thought that lugging the engine put undue stress on the crank.

Only on extended freeway driving. Fourth is nice and torquey at 65 and in city traffic. My favorite gear is third. See some fun? Drop down to third, stomp on it, up shift...aaah.

Still unable to find 5th gear? :p

3rd gear is quite fun isn't it!

Std. gear set in 901 gear box with a 2.2 loves the 3rd and 4th back and forth. Works so well between 40 and 75mph where most driving takes place. 5th seems almost like an overdrive for sustained long periods of highway driving.

Interesting thread. Seems most don't use 5th very much.

I mostly use 4th on the highway, unless I'm going quickly. I find that running my SC below 3000 rpm for any sustained amount of time results in drivability problems.

I'm probably fouling a plug. I start to get backfires on start, and some low rpm stumbles. After a slug of Techron, the problem goes away. If I run consistently at or above 3000rpm, the problem never happens. So, that is one reason I don't use 5th too much.

The other reason, is it pulls so much nicer in 4th at highway speeds. :)

At Willow Springs, it's right before I enter turn 8 and right after I exit turn 9.

I take fifth close to redline twice every 90 seconds there.

But I've got pretty short gears.

For me, cruising at 80mph means 4000 rpm in 5th.

Reminds me of how my 3.2 was before I upgraded my ignition system to high energy (HEI).

It's so nice having an engine that's so flexible that 5th gear at 1200 rpm is as smooth and useful as it is at 6K.

Cheers,

Joe

Use it pretty often on my car, mostly when I'm out on the highway 75+. Then again the final ratio is alittle off with the low profile 50 aspect ratio 15 inch tires.....I try not to "lug" the motor around in top gear, around town.
