Here's a very close estimate. If you stay with Motronic (single-throttle body) and avoid things like Titanium valve spring retainers, you can save $1500 or so off this estimate.

You could also probably spend just about the same money for rebuilding a core 993 engine, after selling your 3.2. That might be a better choice, certainly a better hp/$ ratio.

But this is from experience:

[this isn't a plug to sell a rebuild--I'm busy enough]

And after you buy it you'd even have some $$$$ left to play with...

Ha! I think you mean "$$$$ left to rebuild with" :D A race motor would be nice, but I need a zippy street motor whose life is measured in tens of thousands of miles, rather than tens of hours. That is a sweet motor though. I looked long and hard at that a few days ago.

I just got done reading Trog's PMO ITB thread, and I was blown away. After that, I can't imagine not doing ITBs. Displacement and piston/cam selection seem to be the big remaining questions at this point.

BTW, I appreciate all the suggestions. It's definitely helped me to figure out what I want. Now if I can just figure out what that is....

It is a sweet motor, and a good deal, IMHO. Can you hold your horses, and drive it conservatively...cough...:D? Dude, stop redlining that thing after every stop light! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat3.gif

Numbers look not too bad either...buy that one for 11.5 sell your 3.2 and you left with decent reserves if service is needed...I dunno, just thinking outloud.

How about just going for short gears and light weight. With a custom chip and free flowing exhaust you could have 250-260 hp. Get the weight down to 2200 lbs and you still have a combo that is tough to beat and smog can be easily handled.

In Calif. a 76 911 is smog exempt.

I know of an 84 Carrera Turbo Look with 250k miles that would make a great core for a build. Already has turbo fenders, a LSD transmission, 930 brakes, better 930 rear swing arms, and 7&8 Fuchs for less than $15k.

This is roughly the setup that I have and LOVE it! Would probably need cams as well to be sure to get to/over the 250 range.

1 5/8 to 1 7/5's headers with a good sport/race muffler (Flowmaster, Coast, Magnaflow) set up should get you there with a custom chip from 911Chips.com. If you are willing to run race gas it is possible to get up to 270fwhp with the right exaust and stock cams.

I am not an expert but I would not spend money on a cam change on a 3.2. With that you should have the rockers redone & sport valve springs. If I was opening it up to a 3.4 or more that is different.

A friend & I are seeing 210-220rwhp with a bypass & chip. That is 250+ fwhp.

I do not think the intake side is much of an issue. Check out the dyno charts at 911chips.com.

Just keep it away from 7k as the rod bolts are a potental issue.
