Popping out of 1st

I have a 1982 SC which is having some transmission problems. The transmission was rebuilt 10,000 miles ago and at about 8,000 miles it started to occasionally slide out of first gear. Sometimes its so smooth it goes unnoticed, other time's it violently comes out of gear with a a loud pop. Sometimes holding my hand on the shifter will keep it from sliding out, but other times it comes out of gear with such force that I can't stop it.

It seems to pop out of gear 75% of the time after I've used first gear and the clutch is engaged while its already in first. Say stop an go traffic. Other times it slides out while driving in first, making turning out onto a busy road quite hazardous at times.

It is fairly easy to shift into the other gears, and it is only first in which it pops out of. The transmission fluid was replaced with Swepco 2,000 miles ago. Transmission mounts and shifter bushings were replaced 50 miles ago.

Any thoughts?

pull up the shifter boot and see if the shifter touches the front of the shift tower before 1st is fully engaged. other than that, the shift forks may not have been adjusted properly on the rebuild, or there were wear items that didn't get replaced on the rebuild, or several of the syncro dog teeth have broken off. the teeth can usually be found on the drainplug magnet.

When it happened on my car, it was the synchro dog teeth. The trans hadn't been rebuilt to that point.
