Red Book engine # question

How come my Porsche Red Book goes from starting engine # to ending engine # until 1978? Then it goes from the start # to "on"

Example:
1976-1977 K series engines
6370001 - 6373531

But then for 1978 and on it states stuff like:
6280001 - on

What gives? I was trying to look up 6451134 for a friend, but it makes no sense.

No A/C, no Sun Roof, no power windows. Fast and light, just the way I like it. (Sad to say, it's sold. But at least it remains with us on this board.)

I'm looking at my Red Book, and if the number's right, I think it's an '81 U.S. 930/16.

I don't have an explanation for the "XXXXXXX-on" thing.

It gets easier after '81, because the third engine digit was replaced with a letter designation that matched the car's program-year letter, as in "C" for '82, "D" for '83 and so forth.
