Fuchs on a 964
 
Can the classic Fuchs wheels be installed on a 964? What would need to be modified on the car to make this happen? And if it actually is doable without a huge amount of mods, could it be done on a C4? Even with the 4WD and ABS?

No, early Fuchs use low offsets, 964 up use high offsets.

High offsets can be used on early cars because a spacer reduces o/s

Some of the aftermarket 17" Fuchs would fit over the calipes as well as continue using 17" tires. As for offset ?????

Yeah, I knew the offset was significantly different, but was unsure of any differences in suspension (other than coils vs. tortion bars). Didn't know if anything from the 911 could be swapped in to achieve this. It would be kinda nice to see the two side by side. Should search for some suspension pics...

See Jeff Alton's 17" Fuchs, These are 3-piece wheels which means inner and outer hoops can be sized accordingly.

Welded 17" Fuchs wheels can also be fabricated to your desired offset. Using 951 centers (944 Fuchs) provides more caliper clearance.

Alton's are nicer in appearance in my opinion (but then again I bought a set) but there is a British Tuner who build "RS" replicas from C2/4's and has made a billet wheel to accomplish this. For some reason the name is escaping me, but you could do a search for the "look" this gives. His outer aren't as accurate as Jeff's, but the offset may or may not visually work for you. No you can't swap out the spindle/hub from a 911 to "fix" this.

Ah yes the old mind is slow. Paul Stephens in GB is the creator of these. The 964 based cars are refered to as a PS300.

Thanks for the kind words guys, I am hoping to put a set together in the high offset fit for a 964 by the middle of January. Depending on my schedule, they may even be 18's....

In the photos his wheels are kinda fugly. The offset on the cars shown doesn't look all that bad. No where near as good as a set of real Fuchs or Lindsey's (or other modded ones) on a 911 mind you, but not bad, either.

What I really wanted to know, as you answered, is if this can be "fixed" to use Fuchs.

The 964 hubs were redesigned to allow the integration of ABS braking. Shy of moving back to pre-964 suspension parts, which would bring a lot of corollary headaches with it, you can't change the necessary offsets for wheels that would mate with the 964 hubs.

2-piece and 3-piece can be made to work. The deep-dish-ness of the wheels gets compromised on normal-width wheels. There was a backdated 964 done as an early widebody that looked pretty good with 17-inch 2-piece Lindseys.

BLATANT OPINION TIME:

I saw those PS Auto Art cars too. There are two big problems with custom-making Fuchs wheels to fit a 964 as far as I'm concerned:

1) If you want the classic look of the Fuchs wheels, then custom making a set of high-offset wheels using Fuchs centers isn't going to give it to you. Since the offsets are wildly different, the wheels end up looking like weird Fuchs-inspired replicas, NOT like real Fuchs wheels. Look hard at those PS Auto Art cars and their wheels. Even with all the long-hood bodywork, the wheels just look wrong to me. Seriously wrong.

2) Fuchs wheels look cool on older cars because they are age appropriate for older cars. But just as the wheels from a 2009 911 Turbo would look out of place on a 1974 911, the reverse is also true. I'm 41 years old now, so I'd look silly dressed up like an 18 year old skater. I think cars are the same way.

PS Auto Art was kinda FORCED to go that route. They made a business out of backdating 964's to look like 1973 and earlier cars. So they kinda had to come up with the closest thing they could come up with. And if you want to go whole hog and backdate the car to a long-hood look, then maybe that'll be your best bet. But if the car is going to stay looking like a 964 in every other aspect, I have a feeling you will be disappointed with the look of a high-offset, quasi-fuchs replica wheel, no matter how nicely it has been constructed.

Just my two cents...

For a long while I thought the best wheels for a 964RS would be Fuchs, but the 16s wouldn't look right cos they are too small, the offset is totally wrong and more importantly the calipers interfere.
If you have the money you have a couple of Fuchs replica wheel builders out there that specialise But what a site that would be though, and I'd have them polished up too like my 16s, but anodised grey or powder coated black - wicked!!

When I was looking for 17s for my car I came across this, but I chose to spend the money on something else instead.
What anyone says about it not looking good, take it from me they do look right on a 964, just that no one has tried it - given the chance if I had a basic 964, I'd be doing just that.
