I got rid of the rear one and added Performance Aire's underbelly condenser and saw a big improvement.

I eliminated mine this fall and replaced it with a 993 condenser (with fan) in the driver side front wheel well. Works great.

Mike, can you post pics of the mounts or brackets used to locate your 993 condenser install in the left front fender?

Looks like you hve a 993 body kit on your car. Do you think It could be fit on a SC/Carrera with stock front bumpers? I have heard it is not easly done.

I fabricated a couple of brackets (top and bottom). The top bracket is short, connects to the headlight bracket and bears most of the weight. The bottom bracket is very long (runs from the sway bar bolt, under the condenser, and up to the fender). It doesn't bear much weight but keeps the condenser in position. If I were going to do it again, I'd see if I could find a used 993 condenser, fan and bracket to save some of the fabrication time. Here's a link to a guy's story of putting one into an '86 http://www.pcaucr.org/site/page.jsp?pageid=221

Looking into the wheel well towards the front of the car, the condenser's open side is towards the trunk and the fan side is towards the left fender (air is pulled thru the fan). Here are a few pics. Side view:

What are the advantages, less weight in the tail, less engine heat??? Do these advantages make the changes worth while?

My "84" has the window washer bottle in the left front fender well. So the alternate would be the belly condenser which has it's pros and cons.

Interesting subject...

I have a condensor in the L/R wheel well with a fan and a heat shield between it and the cat so it does "see" the cat. I made the head shield out of some fiberglass house insulation and two heavy duty throw away aluminum baking pans I got from Smart & Final. I then sandwiched the fiberglass between the two pans and closed them with a desktop stapler. Cost about $3. I've thought of removing my decklid condensor because I have the L/R one and the front one. When I sit in traffic in the summer, it seems the decklid one gets heat soaked.

You are right, I had to convert to a window washer tank inside the trunk to make this work. The 993's are reputed to have decent air conditioning compared to ours, and they only use the wheel well condenser and fan. Condensers weigh very little so probably not a really big deal for weight. I appreciated not having the extra heat going through the engine. In my case, I have a full-bay intercooler in the way in the engine compartment, so OEM position wasn't really an option. The 993 condenser is more efficient than the older engine bay ones. I kept the front bumper condenser and fan just because I thought it might be useful. I just started a thread with a few more details on what I did when upgrading the AC. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/447259-major-ac-upgrade.html
