Unkown AC component behing left rear wheel.
So there I was at the shop the other day and I noticed a component that looked like an AC condenser with a fan or an evaporator, I dont know. Anyhow the car is a 1981 SC RoW, as far as I know this car is completely stock as far as the PO and myself know. I can sometimes hear the fan kick on while I'm driving, but I dont know exactly what it is. Any help would be nice.

I see a fan but its hard to tell what you have there. I do know that there is an aftermarket kit to improve AC with another condenser in a rear wheel well.

It's the radiator!

Radiator! Sweet I was wondering where that was! LOL
Is that kit supposed to replace the condenser from the rear lid? |
Is this it? KuehlFenderCondensers

The site is Griffiths at http://www.griffiths.com/shop/ and you you can drill down from there through the Porsche section compressors to find the left rear fender compressor. |
It is the primary AC condenser. I have the same setup. It is an aftermarket part, not stock. If your not going to use your AC, you should list that in the classifieds, that setup works well and is pricey to purchase new.

Here's a couple of pics on how mine is hooked up. I can take some more detailed shots if you need them. These are photos I had on my laptop.

It appears that you still have the condensor on the rear deck. You can see that one hose is still attach to the deck c ondensor.

That is corect, hot gas discharge from the AC compressor goes to the fender mounted condensor first, then continues to the decklid condensor. They are conected in series.

I have the same thing. I made a heat shield out of some fiberglass insulation and two disposable aluminum foil baking pans I got from Smart & Final. I wedged it in around the cat so that the condensor doesn't "see" the cat. Cost me about $3, helps when you're idling.
