Silver....

I had an all original, low mileage '72 coupe about 15 years ago and the trim was silver.

I have a 72 E and the trim is silver, but my guess is that some cars produced late for the 1972 model year could have had 73 lenses and horn grills etc installed direct from the factory, which are black.

JMHO...

Ratlsnak "i think the Ts were black, and the Es and Ss were chrome."

Where did that pearl of wisdom come from?????? T's were also delivered with only 3 fuchs and 5 ignition leads....

Me- 72T, silver grills. How is the blasting going? Who did you get to do it in the end?

jason at auto blasting in pukekohe is going to do the work. it was going down this week but i found that low pressure blasting won't remove the seam sealer , so i have been cleaning off every seam via die grinder and angle grinder with wire brush.
So the car is going down on the 28th and blasted on the 4th. watch this space

Pic above was taken by Randy Webb. The chrome horn grills are original, so are the USA fog lights...I went to 1973 Euro colored signal lenses with black trim... BUT...the original USA lenses that I gave Evren with the car are silver trim.

I owned the car from 1974 until 2007...it had 7,000 on the odo when I bought it.

My 72 T and 72S were chrome. I do not think Porsche ever used silver in the 70's.

I think silver is being used here as a color...not the material.

thats the big question , as it's is a euro car were they different? also the car had the "s" apperance package which means gold script on the rear deck lid , so would that also make a difference in the black verses chrome fit out?

Gold script? Nope...anodized black for the word PORSCHE and the "911S" badge...ditto the engine grille, the "2.4" was chrome. Gold on earlier "S" cars, but not for the '72 model year.

72s had black script and grill but chrome horn grills, turn signal and tail light edges. 73s went to black horn grills and turn signal and tail light edges. Some early 73s may have chrome until Porsche ran out old stock though. Gold was an option I believe.

There were also folks who liked the gold trim better, so removed the anodized black and installed the gold trim pieces. Back in the day, folks weren't as obsessed with originality as they are these days.

If you're looking at a used '72 and it has black plastic horn grilles? Inspect carefully for collision damage...when the chrome grills ran out, body shops would replace with black plastic.
