Need a Central Florida mechanic

I'm punting on doing my own work. A mouse moving on top of a cylinder during Fay, and the resulting need to pull the alternator, has resulted in months of one problem leading to the next, so the 72 has to go in. I need a solid shop to handle general fixups, and also to convert the two battery system to one - I have no idea how complicated that is - , I'm sick and d**n tired of those little batteries dying everytime the car sits for a month or the outside temp drops below 60 degrees. I'm in Lake County, do I go Zotz, Nort, or elsewhere? Hans Hohman (sp?) rebuilt the motor last time in the 1980's (probably 5,000 miles ago, don't know if he's still around, and am still reminded of the white smoks the mechanics wore at the time. Says Pop, "I don't know how much it is going to be, but guys in white coats is a bad sign." Any recomendations, warnings, etc. would be welcome. One more thing. It needs to be ready for the 24 hours, so I can't have a guy willing to kick around with it when he gets the mood. Thanks in advance...

Mechanic

Hi there

I also live in Lake County Florida, Fruitland Park to be exact. I do all my repairs because I couldn't find anyone locally. JB racing has done some machine work for me and Mike Burns is one the greatest guys ever you may want to give him a call and see if he knows anyone.

Being a former Orlando resident, I can say that Zotz is good. You could also try:

Troysport
407-297-7733
3838 Commerce Loop
Orlando, Florida 32808-3818
http://www.troysport.com

Stashu's
407-331-0930
800 SR 434 West
Longwood, FL 32750
http://www.stashus.com/

All three of them are long time PCA members and supporters and are more then capable of helping you out.

+1 on Mike Brunz and JB Racing. They did all of my machine work, rebuilt the engine and completed break in. Mike is the best Porsche guy I have met in the ten years I have been involved with the cars.

JB Racing - Jim Riggs - Mike Bruns - class outfit. Mike Bruns if you need an engine built - the man has a gift. Troysport or Zoltz in Orlando.

Mike did the top end of my 2.4 and I would gladly take my engine back to him.

JB Racing is a machine shop. I am not sure they will do general maintenance on your car.

I would recommend:

Sid at Troysport

or

Donnie at Zotz.

Both awesome people with first class operations.

A little further south, is Orbit Racing, everything from a oil change to complete and total engine rebuild and racing. I believe they took over Moroso Race Track in Jupiter!

I agree with Byron...don't forget Redbone - they do great work. Owner is Robin - spent many years as the shop manager at the local Porsche dealership and KNOWS just about everything about these cars.

BTW - I installed 2 new batteries from NAPA a few years back and have had NO PROBLEMS with them. I use a battery tender because the car sits sometimes between uses. If you are not using one, you really should. I wouldn't do the conversion to one battery. I love the originality of the two. My 2 cents.

Bazza,

No one listens to you anyway.

Good to see you on here. I'll be in FL for most of Jan, maybe we can catch up at the 24hr this year. No definite plans yet. Take care my friend. Do you still have that trailer I sold you?

Hi John,

Thanks - good to hear from you also!

Yes, I still have the trailer. Sits outside unfortunately so weather has taken a bit of a toll, but it actually still functions really well. I've noticed it's mostest happy while toting 911's around.

Here I am with it in October transporating my '83 resto project to my home from a friend's where it was "in storage".

Yes, I hope to be at the 24 in Jan so feel free to PM me as we get closer if you want.

Merry Christmas to you and Barney!
