3.0 RSR Le-Mans long tail identification & info
Hi Guys,
I am trying to get any info on the car in the pic below. The pic was taken from another post here. I need to know if Porsche ever made a 1974 type RSR with the long tail as in the pic. The only info that I can find thus far, is that it may have been a Le Mans special tail. It looks similar to a 935 tail. ![]() Thanks Markus |

Markus,
Thats a 935, circa 1977,... ![]() Those were built for FIA Grp 5 which allowed such tails. RSR's raced Grp 4 which prevented their use and IMSA adopted those same regulations.

Markus,
That photo is of a 1976 935 (specifically, from the Silverstone 6 Hour in early May). The factory ran the 935 with that tail at Vallelunga and Silverstone. At Le Mans, they began using the tail we are famaliar with. PS - Happy Holidays Steve! Mom and Dad say hi. |

Is that the early 935 when they were still allowed the air to air intercooler and non-stock silhouette tail? Does it still have the round fenders and headlights from Vellunga?

The factory actually experimented with a long tail on the 73 RSR. Both Penske and Gregg raced with them on their cars. As the cars were classified as prototypes in this form, it was of no concern to rules makers at that time. The tails were developed further into the 935 series later on. But were not homologated for Group 4 competition on the RSR
Someone here should have pics of them installed on either of the RSR's

"Chassis No: 911 360 0307 R3
Engine No: 663 000. 2993cc. 330 BHP/8000 rpm. Slide injection. Type: 911/75. Prod. No: 103 3677. Gearbox No: 793 1013. Color: Ossi-blue with red lettering. Built: 12/72. This was the Penske-entered car at the Daytona 24-hours 1973 that, driven by Mark Donohue/George Follmer, damaged a piston and retired. Race no: 6. Sold to Al Holbert who used it to take 2nd place in the1973 Trans-Am Championship. Car carried race no: 14." from: http://www.johnstarkeycars.com/pages/articles/articles_42.html I am fairly certain this was a special long tail RSR which Donahue/Penske modified to keep the rear end from getting light at speed while at Daytona. It was not the car you've pictured. This would have been a one-off.

Thanks for the response guys.
Juicersr, do you know if the white Martini car was produced by the factory, or if it was an aftermarket special? I currently have a 74 RSR ish replica, but have not been happy with the standard tail/wing. ![]() I am just looking for something a little different from the norm. Is the white car above actually an early 935? Cheers |

The car in the first pic IS the 1976 935 that wore the rear rounded RSR modified flares for approx. 2 races before being switched over to the boxed 935 bodywork later that season.
The pics that JuiceRSR posted are of the bodywork the car raced with, but it did its qualifying runs with the slant nose fenders and bumper as seen below for speed testing and top end data gathering for later races etc. The car in the OP is a factory original, not a customer car that they did with sponsorship from Martini. You can tell by the uber rare experimental 19" BBS e50 rim halves, which the RSR's or 934's never ran with. I know because I have these wheels on my car when I recreated the 935/76 early bodywork version. ![]() ![]() Here are the 935 Rims on my car, I didn't block my rear vents on the quarters as I'm not limited by rules that state you can't be able to see the rear tires within the bodywork. ![]() ![]()

Gabe, great info. Need to go read up a little more over the holiday on this period, as i have never been clear.
You know, to me, one of the bad azz things about that prototype 935 was how slammed the car was... that car just looks so perfect. Looking at your car in comparison to the real one, if you could only drop it to get that orginal 'look'!! It would be a kidney-killer on real world roads tho, plus rubbing issues.

Well since I have the full adjustable RSR suspension I can drop it so the front almost touches the ground, and the rear needs to be set down 1.5" so by the time you see it next summer she'll be sittin just right.
And you're 100% right that the slammed look is money on those prototypes... By the way here is a shot showing the evolutions and the first three evolutions close up: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

On that 934 you posted that's wearing the 19" wheels, once the Group 5 guys got off the ground so to speak, once the factory did the early slant 935/76 the privateers started getting the "hand me down" parts and also buying new from the vendors or factory once they were available but that didn't happen until '77.

Thanks for all the responses.
This board is amasing. 24 hours ago, i didn't even know how the 935 evolved, and then to land up with this amount of info, is incredible. I have never been a fan of the flat nose, but the pic above with the early 935 flat nose in white Martini is looking like more of a possibility. I will possibly change to the 935 tail and front bumper, for this season, and start to make up the flat nose fenders for later in the season. A friend of mine has the 935 tail moulds here in South Africa, and I am sure I could fab up a front bumper out of the 934 and turbo RSR moulds that are locally available. Thanks again, and keep this info coming. Has not been a lot here on the early 935 development cars. |
