hood shock access

Was working on the car today and just discovered that on my 84 there is an access hole under the dash to get to the hood shock pin on the drivers side. Not sure if it is always open as I have pulled all the ventilation out of the car but it looks like it was just put there to get to the shock mount.

just changed the hood struts on my 87 drop top today... The passenger side was a 5 minute breeze, while the drivers side... took some messing around with needle nose pliers....

Got it done!

now I have to watch that the hood doesnt come up and slam me in my chin, It really comes up and stays up now

Paul,
What brand of shock did you install. I have heard not all shocks are equal.

I wondered how to get at the clip on the drivers side for at least 30 minutes. As it turns out, there wasn't a clip on my car to hold the pin in at all ... a previous hood strut change must have omitted it. I put a new strut in with just the pin, and it has not been an issue in 18 months of use - the pin has not moved. Makes some sense, as the strut is always exerting a force on the pin. So, the clip isn't really necessary. Or so it would appear.

I put a piece of dental floss on the clip so it would not drop into the abyss.

I Installed "URO" shocks.

The shocks were $7.73 each from ********.com item number APA 911 511 331 01 from their store. They are made nicely, and hold the bood up. I like them!

After 3 sets and having the Life Time Guaranteed Weltmeisters go to the big parts dump in the sky - I gave up the struggle and purchased the light weight alternative from Seine Systems http://www.seinesystems.com/Ult-Strut-Home.htm

I have went through two sets of Stabilus Hood shocks in the last two years. I will not bother changing again.
