Targa RSR?
 

I was just thinking today how hawt my car would look if I backdated it, flared it, painted it minerva blue, and put some 15X9X11s on it. I've only seen that look on coupes, but I think it would look good on a targa. Does anyone have any pictures of targa RSRs? Or anything similar?

This car raced in SCCA DP back in the late '70s and finished 3ed at the runoffs at Road Atlanta. It is more ST than RSR but it will give you some ideas.

I love those rims! I never understood why people removed the windshield on race cars though. Sure you save weight, but it seems like it would really harm aerodynamics. Oh well, great car nonetheless. Thanks for the pics!

IROC/3.0L RSR targa via fellow Pelican copbait73 from the mid 80's. One version of what a widebody on an early targa ('72) would look like. This one ended up with a twin turbo 3.0L... in the mid 80's, quite a rare build for the time.

Oh, that black one is nice. That's the look I'd be going for, except in Minerva blue, and with 911R taillights.

I'd say go with the 1974 RSR bodywork with R lights...fat fenders make it look mean

well I don't mind the 74 RSR front, but I detest the rear bumper, whereas I love everything about longhoods.

Although I just priced out flares and 15X9X11 rims and the appropriate tires, and yikes! I need a new job to do all this stuff! So I guess I'll ever so slowly start accumulating parts, and then one day start this project.

I love my Targa. But, I just don't think the "all out" RSR look fits the open top.

Ed Hughe's Targa is mean as hell and I think he has struck the perfect balance aesthetically too. When Ed comes to his senses and puts his old Fuchs back on, his Targa will look even more proper.

Good approach...it's how I went about my RS backdate.....I spent 6-9 months accumulating parts from Pelicanites in the classified forum, Ebay and Pelican Parts....then went ballistic on the project......:D

Ed lost his senses (and sold his Fuchs) when the 993 brakes went on! But, he is in total agreement that look was the best. So, he was the first one in line for Jeff Alton's new 17" forged repros. Hopefully only a couple of weeks to go...:D

ed, you have the best looking targa on this board. hands down.

you did go all sideways when you got rid of the fuchs....but fuch looking will be just as great. pics in two weeks?

Dave Bouzaglou of TRE Motorsports' first Porsche, an early Targa with turbo flares and some wide Fuchs. This car comes hauling past DB Sweeney in the opening scene of the movie No Man's Land.

Porsche ownership is a personal thing.

Personal, the way Dave did his Targa looks excellent.

I never much cared for Targa's with tails. The possible exception is maybe a duck tail. Even then it messes up the back of what is otherwise a good looking car.

On this subject, I've been thinking of something on the front and rear to lighten her up. I don't want to do a longhood conversion, but I'd been looking at RS/RSR goodies. I'm also not a big fan of the early rear bumper, unless it comes on a '73 RS sitting in my garage.

So, I'd looked at Ruf style, but I don't know if that goes with my retro look. IF I do something, I may just go to fiberglass repros of the Carrera bumpers like Getty Design offers. I think it would not only lighten each end up, but getting rid of the bellows, bumpers and smile would give a cleaner look.

The downside? Vulnerability to *********s in traffic.

Ed, how do you like the '74 RS front/rear bumpers? And then there's always the option of just removing the rear bellows and filling the holes, or getting a fiberglass repo of the front/rear, smoothing them to remove the black trim. That's something I've considered also.

I think they'd be a good bridge in keeping my Carrera/Retro mix. I'm kind of leaning toward going this route instead of reworking what I have, to gain a bit of weight savings along the way.

I'd also one time thought of going to an ST-sized flare...but I'm not sure how far I want to hack the old girl up. Having said that, she'll never be a show car. Maybe in a few years when I decide to paint her again.
