74’ dash ‘backdating’

Hi,

I am working on backdating my dash inserts on a 74’ 911. I have my hands on the rennline insert kit paired with their lower dash knee pad delete. Looking for pointers on how to handle the glove box / door. Do I just buy a 73’ glove door and bolt it in?

I used some 18 ga (I think) metal and crudely formed it to match the contour of the glovebox door:


I cut it to size


I used some hardboard panel to build the thickness so the steel was flush with the front of the glovebox and so there was sufficient surface area for the adhesive to adhere


I rattle can painted it, added an ebay sourced dash insert that I had done a black texture finish on, and some bamboo panel. The knee pad is the factory pad covered in Alcantara. The upper dash will be covered in Alcantara next time I remove the glass


If I had to do it over I'd probably tack weld the metal to the existing glove box door for simplicity and durability. What I did is holding fine, it just seems a little wonky. Oh, and I'd probably use a thinner metal so it would be easier to form.

Wow that looks really good. Unfortunately I don’t have the tools to be able to press things nicely. I found a 73’ door with lock on eBay for ~$140. I hope it works out like I’m expecting. I may end up filling in the center lock and drill a new hole in the upper left corner like the original. If that doesn’t work I may resort to figuring how to fabricate one like you did.

If you can use CAD software (or any drawing software like illustrator or photoshop) you can have a piece of metal laser cut and bent by send cut send. Probably $25

I backdated mine (or I should say, my last one) with an earlier door, it will bolt in and the latch will work if you bend a small tab of metal down on the dash frame so it catches. That will leave you with the new style frame opening which is fine, really, but if you like cutting and welding....

That is exactly what I’m gonna do. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a 73’ glovebox dope in decent shape. How did you knock out the tab to create a new latch?

I think I just bent the inside metal frame of the glovebox opening down a few mm and it was enough to allow the latch to catch on it perfectly so I declared that bit done and moved on.

There is a door lock striker #91155251300 but it's NLA.

It was pretty simple. I used a dremel, cut two small notches and bent it to create a tab. Added some epoxy to smooth it all out.

All done!

Started as a 74’ interior that was in ‘ok’ shape.

I filled in the speaker grill on the dash cover and wrapped it in chocolate brown leather, the dash holes for the defrost/seatbelt light/wiper speed/ were welded in and bondo’ed smooth. I sourced a 73’ glovebox door and rennline back date inserts that I filled in with karo madras tartan. Upholstered the inside of the glovebox just for a little bit of fun. Filled in the glovebox lock with epoxy and formed it smooth so I can paint the lock itself.

Today the project was complete. So happy how it all turned out. Thx for all the advice from the folks here!

Thank you. We spent the time to line up all of the horizontal and vertical tartan from the dash inserts though the door panels, rear quarters, package trays. Just that little bit of extra time spent went a long way. I took a bit of a risk when deciding on the dark green German weave carpet but I don’t think I could have picked a better color. I also broke up the carpet a bit with a leather wrapped center tunnel that I think came out nicely too.
