964 C4 conversion to C2 - feasible?
Got a buddy with a 91 C4 (that was SUPPOSED to be the donor of a 3.6 for my 72 - would have been sweet). He is wondering if it is feasible to convert it to 2WD operation without replacing the transaxle, i.e, doing so via disconnecting and/or removing stock components. Any thoughts? Has this been done?
Could it be as simple as disconnecting driveline components...with what BA likes to call the Sputnik AWD system, I have my doubts, but have no hands on experience with them. Thanks, Al

Go do a search on rennlist, you'll find it can be done, but you'll end up spending a ton of coin. Good luck

I won't be spending anything, as its his car...and I doubt that he will be able to do it. I understand the AWD system's complexities are considerable.

Yah I think the computer issues will never get resolved unless you had a C2 donor and a ton of time. I think I remember reading an article in Porsche 911 World about a Brit who machined a piece to make the transaxle 2wd....or maybe that was an Audi trans axle??

In summary... It is possible but not worth it.. Computer is different, transmission and diferrential will just not take the missing parts... if it was a 993 it would be easy...
There was an article in the Panorama Magazine with exactly that. Many have asked and no-one seems to have accomplished this.

I've told him to give up on the idea. The car needs a general freshening, but I don't think this "mod" will be feasible.
All the more reason for him to let me have its 3.6L after all... ![]()
