Twin Dizzy Suggestions?

It needs to look pretty damn close to original "vintage" for a 2.7 carb motor running 10.5:1 that I would like to build. Who have you used and what were your experiences? Prices?

Thanks very much..

Stu

I used to sell the Jarvis distributor. It's a very nice billet piece that uses a very readily available Jaguar Marelli cap that gives a vintage look without RSR replacement prices. Steve at Rennsport Systems has carried them in the past. I don't know what they run these days, but they used to be about $2000. It can be used with a pair of 6 pin CDI's or MSD boxes. IIRC, HSR allows the use of the MSD boxes, while the FIA sanctioned guys in Europe we used to sell to had to use the factory boxes.

The only real downside of this unit was it had a magnetic mechanical advance. At idle there was no advance and then when it reaches several thousand. RPM's it exceeds the strength of the magnet and goes to around 12 degrees. There's no vacuum advance or variability to it.

I'd be using factory boxes. Looking for a "period" restoration without the pain of original in-the-day parts. (but I can be swayed!)

Anyone have experience with this guy from Belgium? http://www.raceservice4u.com/Shop.htm

Keep em coming!

bump! (HELP please!)

I made my own to use readily available parts. The cap is an off-the-shelf Jaguar unit and the rotor is available from Aaron Burnham (Burn-Bros.) on this board.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/429416-my-3-2ss-part-ii-some-parts.html?highlight=twin+plug

I converted mine to trigger via a Crane Optical unit and spark is delivered through two Hi6 boxes.

In addition to Steve at Rennsport Systems I would also check out Henry at Supertec in CA and JB Racing in FL.

A quick search of Twin plug distributors on this board will provide lots of information.

How about the conversion to run a custom rotor and an off-the-shelf V12 Jag distributor cap on a Bosch distributor?

Check <a href="http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=233511">this thread</a> out.

what this country needs is not a good 5 cent cigar, but a good reasonably priced 12 wire distributor...

these things should NOT cost $2,000 -- if we all standardized on a single design and everybody that was going to need one when the fuel gets crappy in the future, bought one NOW... we'd be there.

sezme 01-06-2009 06:31 AM

Bingo. Thats what I am finding out. The "normal suspects" make it easy to get in at $2K, but there are suggested upgrades (caps, rotors) that send the price to $2500. If you want a spare repro MM cap, points, and rotor - add another $1K.

Like I said - it's gotta look period correct; no billet.

Who has brand experience? Has anyone seen Aarons unit?

12 pin dist

SZ, take a look at our web site, or do a search for JB Racing dist. there are several racers and hot rodders that have used them here. we make them for all 911's from 2.0- 3.8 and also the CCW for the SC complete with cap/rotor and dual pick ups.

Thanks, Mike Bruns JBRacing.com

SZ, I just noticed that you don't want a "Billet" look, what we have done in the past for that is during the build we can blast and tumble finish the housing and that will give you the look close to cast for your restoration.

parts

Stu, we designed our dist. with the aftermarket jag. 12 cap/rotor made by Facet in Italy, it can be bought at most auto parts stores even at NAPA, the cap is a direct bolt on part, you can lift the placard that shows firing position that is held in place with a dot of silicone and transfer it to the new cap. The rotor platform is threaded to be able to change out the rotor with small allen hardware and a drop of blue loc tite, Jeff posted some pics that will show you more detail ( Thanks Jeff)
the cost of cap/rotor is reasonable and available.

Thanks, Mike Bruns

+1 for JB Racing

Yeah, I must agree the JB Racing Dist. is very nice. I've had mine for a few months now and have set, and reset the advance mechanism . . . works like a charm. Also really like the lockdown clamp . . . alows you to set the initial timing . . . and remove/install the dist without having to reset the initial timing again. My only question is . . . was the design of the two mag pickups really for reduncancy? The recommendation is to run only one pickup at a time. Are their any 'phasing' issues when you run them in parallel (two)?

MBruns 01-06-2009 11:59 AM

Phasing

Tom, you can adjust the pickups to get both the same, they are typicaly used as a redundant pickup, these internals were designed for NASCAR style dual systems so we prefer to split the signal from the dist. to the MSD boxes, and with timing confirmed on the second pickup its a spare.

Mike Bruns

Tom C. 01-06-2009 12:05 PM

That makes sense . . . no disadvantage to running just one pickup at a time (at least that I can see).

BTW, the customer service from JB Racing was/is excellent.

sezme 01-06-2009 01:43 PM

Just gotta wrap my head around the billet issue....

Dist.

I may have a housing or a test piece that I can prep and Tumble with the media to give you an idea of the finish and post a picture. Last year we made some Hi Butterfly cross shaft bearing mounts that were no longer avail. and they were cast originally and we made the new parts with the CNC and blasted and tumbled them and they really looked period correct as it turned out he bought several hundred of the pieces.

Stu, did you get my post about the test finish piece ?
