Clutch cable problem Porsche 1970 (Bowden)
I stepped through my clutch yesterday, now after inspection, it is a 1970 Porsche 911 with push clutch (Bowden), it turned out that the tip had came loose, the problem was quickly fixed but I am still left with concerns that it will happen again. There is some wear on the case where the nipple sits. Is there anyone here who has a solution for it?

Hi,
I assume you're referring to the little part that holds the end of the cable... Are you saying that it basically "pulled through" the hole, or was it kind of loose so that it just pushed out and then off to the side? It should be under quite a bit of tension regardless of clutch position, so there really shouldn't be anyway for it to "fall" out. I've installed this cable end multiple times after engine out stuff, and it requires backing off the adjustment nuts, pulling the cable end with vice grips, slipping it into the little slot, and then rotating the little part to lock it in. Then, adjust the clutch with the nuts and it will be under a lot of tension. If it is pulling through because the hole is worn, then it would be pretty straight forward to turn a new bigger one on a lathe if you have access to one or a friend... Sorry, I don't have any good pics of the end on my engine. Good luck, Karl |

Hi Karl,
Thanks for your reply, I don't think it was pulled through the hole but rather as you say a little to the side and then came loose. So putting a little more tension on the cable should fix that? Worth a try, as long as the clutch continues to work fine. Pascal. |

I've never had to adjust the cable tension on mine, but when it's properly adjusted (about 3/4" free play on the pedal) it takes quite a bit of strength to pull on the end of the cable. This is why I usually back off the adjustment nuts so it's easy to pull the cable through the slot, rotate the little part, and then adjust the nuts which adds tension.

You give me an idea, I definitely need to check if I turned the slot of the nipple to the case. Thanks.
