Dashboard Gages Inside Cleaning
What would it take to clean the inside of the gages?
How difficult is to remove the glass for cleaning the inside of it? After so many years they have deloped a "cloudy" look and some dust looking particles inside. |

I am curious about this as well - I have a small dead spider in one of mine. I named him Ferry.

Or I could just be talking out my ass. Regardless, it may be something to look into. As for any insects or other stowaways that may have taken up residence there, that's a whole other matter which I have no answer for. -kevin |

If you remove the gauge and the rubber mounting ring, you will see that the gauge bezel (the black metal part surrounding the glass) is pressed and wrapped around the rest of the gauge.
It's not "difficult" to remove, per se, but it is difficult to remove without making it look AWFUL. That said, you don't really see it when the gauges are installed. Of course, the folks at our local speedo shops have some fantastic way of getting it off without making it really ugly, and that's why we pay them so much. ![]()

I think that some are plastic and have "aged". If so it would seem that replacement would be the only solution. I have the same problem.

I understand we can always send them to Palo Alto or North Hollywood Speed.. done it before for calibration and repair; but cleaning them out should be a DIY deal.

The Pelican Tech Info Center has a wealth of info including how to remove gauge faces: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Mult_gauge_repair/mult_gauge_repair.htm
I did mine because they looked like some one had been smoking inside them. The cleaned up beautifully - but removal of the ring around the glass is painstaking and tedious. If you don't have a lot of patience I would not recommend it. Be extremely careful or you will bugger the the ring. Good luck.

A bit off track, but concerning the same thing...
Sometimes my speedometer sticks and if I tap on the glass lightly, it starts working. Does this sound like a cleaning thing...or is something breaking?

kaliv,
I had that problem too. Many times the space between the needle and glass is very close and with a little hot weather and expansion, the needle will stick - not an uncommon problem. I sent mine to one of the speedo shops mentioned above and they put a small spacer between the face and the glass. Problem solved! Some faces are glass (older ones) and some are plastic.
