Debris in oil filter

I am in the process of replacing a weak oil fed tensioner on a SC.
I took off the oil filter, cut it open and found what looks like filings of plastic in the element. I would assume that it is from the chain guides (I could be wrong). The question I wonder is what would the probability of any of this debris getting into the rest of the oiling system (mainly the bearings)? or would it be stopped by the filter?
Thanks
