Door key question
1973 Targa in restoration reassembly...
Just noticed the ingition key doesn't fit the door handles. Is it possible to get keys made for the door locks or do I need to buy new door locks?

Your choice.
Either go to a locksmith and have keys made for the doors and live with two different keys. Or remove the door panels and the door handles from the inside. Have the tumblers re-keyed for your ignition key. Advantage...one key works everything, just like when it left the factory. Don't forget the glove box lock and the trunk lock if you have one. Somewhere along the line someone has probably changed out your ignition switch without having it re-keyed to the doors. If you're really adventurous, you can re-key everything yourself, but it's pretty cheap (and simple) to have it done right by a locksmith. |

I only have a valet key for my 84 I know it's a different key blank for the trunk lock and had one made and it still doesn't work. How hard is it to remove the T-handle for the trunk and get it rekeyed. My glovebox key cylinder has no tumblers at all.

thanks for the suggestions
Thanks StevenTO... the glove box opens with the ignition key. So I'll take a closer look at the door tumblers. Since I'm in reassembly mode, I can pop them out in a couple of minutes.

Hugh, I'm probably the wrong guy to ask. My trunk pull doesn't have a lock mechanism, so I can't lock it. I'm sure it can't be too difficult to remove the T-handle, but probably involves contorting yourself upside down under the steering wheel at a minimum.
On the glove box, if it has a key receptacle, there's a tumbler in there. Just open the door and remove the nut and pull the knob out. Take the knob assy and the T-handle assy to a locksmith. I believe you have him make real ignition keys from the valet key you have and re-key those tumblers to the new key. Before you trundle off to the locksmith, pick up a couple official Porsche ignition key blanks from our host. Use the valet key to grind a couple ignition/door/trunk/glove box keys. Keep the valet key...for the valet. I believe it shouldn't work the trunk or glove box. While he's out joy riding when you're at dinner, you'll be secure in the knowledge your spare tire and inoperable air pump are safe. |
