'72 911T transmission???

Is a 72 911 T targa suppose to have a 4speed transmission? Im looking at buying one that the owner says it has a 4 speed. Is this correct?

The 5 speed was an option. Lower end models had a 4.

That's because about 90+% of all US delivered cars back then were optioned as 5spds. But the comment that the 4spd was the standard is accurate and true. Given that back then the 5spd was about a $100 upgrade option, it makes sense that most of them were sold as 5spds.

Does the 4 speed still have a 7:31 and does it have taller gears?

My 1972 911T has the 4-speed as does another 1972 911T that I drove (Christien's car).

It is a good transmission and believe has the small final ratio as the 5-speed. That said, it could use a taller 5th gear for extended highway (70+ mph) driving.

I can't figure out why the original owner of my car didn't opt for it as he opted for every other option including sport seats, wheel arches, s-trim, 5-gauges, fuchs, etc.

An early 911 is a great buy and in my opinion the 1972 version is the best of the bunch (still has chrome bumpers and trim but with the 2.4L and the upfront oil tank and door). Best of luck!
