Question 1980 SC alternator question ??

Subject car: 1980 911 SC

The car had an aftermarket alternator installed some time ago by previous owner
with an internal built in regulator. the original porsche external regulator was somehow wired in together with it. After long drives the lights tend to dim.

A shop told me that it was wired worng. I am sure it is.

If I were to purchase a new alternator how will I have to wire this properly?

Thank You for your reponses

I thought the 80 SC alternators already had the internal voltage regulator?

No, they went internal in 1982.

To the original post - are you going to replace it with an original type (external) or with what was in the car (internal)?

As for the internal regulated alternators - it's definately not rocket surgery to figure out how to wire it. Three connections, four wires... Find it hard to believe it's been mis-wired all these years... Maybe a poor connection or lousy ground - but not likely a mis-wire.

I had to do this on my '81SC It still had the external Reg. Porsche Tech. Bulletin 1 outlines the procedure.

In short, you disconnect your battery, Pull out the old alternator, CUT the BLACK 'DF' wire at the harness there inside the fan shroud. (I wrapped a little electrical tape around it after I clipped it). Next move over to the left side of engine compartment to the electrical panel. Remove your old external regulator. Take the pin connector and tape it up to the harness. It is no longer used.

Moving back to your old alternator, you need to take off the air guide and cut a smallish rectangular notch out of it to clear on the new alternator. Reinstall.

If your Battery light on the dash doesn't go out you will need to install a 91ohm 5watt resistor in parrallel onto the back of the lamp socket.

Parts, piggyback connector 111 971 511, Resistor 911 641 981 00

Put the piggy back on and soldier the resistor across the contacts.

(On my '81 the light still worked just fine after I switched)

Hope this is helpful, Coop
