will Lemke Design "complete" cooler kit fit a 65 911??
I am looking at putting an external oil cooler on my 911, as it never had one. Has anyone put on a Lemke Design oil cooler kit that includes all fittings - is it a direct fit?
I am curious because it says the kit is for 73-77 911's - but I think the oil fittings are still the same at the tank and engine, right?? Anyone who's done this, I'd appreciate hearing of their experience. Thank you! ![]() |

I don't know what is included with the lemke kit, but the fitting on your 65 are not the same as the 73-77 cars. 26mm vs 30mm.

PEL-LMK-1 is the part number from Pelican...
This is the info from the webpage: "The Lemke Complete Kit comes as either a complete kit for 1974-77 cars not equipped with any external oil coolers. This kit includes lines to adapt the cooler to the engine, as well as a thermostat to control oil flow when the car is cold." http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/POR_911M_oilsys_pg6.htm |

You can replace the engine case fitting with the later 30mm one. I don't know if the lemke has an fitting with adapters, or if they have metric hose-ends. If adapters, you can get a 26mm-> AN adapter for the atank. If not, you could make up a custom hose with a 26 hose end.
But before you put braided stainless lines on the car, I strongly advise you take a look at some cars so equipped. Invariably they have a saggy, wet-noodle cheesy look. Plus braided stainless does a poor job of dissipating heat. It won't help your resale they way a factory setup will. I've sold quite a few sets of finned oil lines to guys who are ripping out braided stainless. Here are a couple examples of cars that are very nice, but the braided stainless lines are bringing them down. ![]() ![]()

Hi Chuck, thanks for the info and the pics. I see what you mean about the wet noodle look; they are not too appealing!
That orange 911 is a beauty!! |

Yes, the orange one in particular is very nice. And the angle of the picture hides the oil lines, yet you still see them sagging. Imagine a full profile shot like the other car.
Early cars like yours can use the 74 to 89 style setup with the factory hard lines, or finned oil lines, and a factory cooler. You can also use the lemke cooler with these lines, but it won't save you any money.
