through body sway bar
What's up guys.. So I've been chasing a clunking sound from the front drivers side in my 86..Sometime in the cars life a weltmeister though body sway was added.. today I found that the backing plates might have been installed improperly, they're on the out side of the inner fender.. Well on the driver side this has caused the fender to tear so the bracket is being held on with 1 nut and bolt.. Wondering the best way to repair or reinforce the inner fenders and do the brackets actually go on the frunk side of the fender? I'm pretty sure this side the cause of the clunking noise.. Any thoughts would be appreciated.. thanks in advance Steve

If I'm thinking of what you are referring to, I believe all you will have to do is get the wheel well welded at the tear point then you can have the reinforcement plates installed and welded correctly while everything is disassembled. It sounds like someone was just lazy in installing the sway bar.
If you post a pic of what you are referring to it may help draw some other ideas.

They go on the outside. They may have been misaligned (holes drilled slightly off center) or installed loosely causing stress that eventually stress cracked the sheet metal.

The sheet metal area in SC, Carrera and later 911s weren't designed to support a through-the-body sway bar. These cars are heavier than earlier 911s and will stress the sheet metal, especially if there's an attempt to effectively stiffen the roll by shortening the lever arms with adjustable drop links.
As suggested, repair the torn sheet metal, then weld reinforcement plates to that area. They're available in the aftermarket. Sherwood |

Take a few measurements and get the holes parallel or directly across from each other.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions..is it possible to do the fix without dropping the fuel tank? Where would one pick up the reinforcement plates? Steve

To install the tank has to come out, to repair , not there, not sure.

Go to google search and type:
"911/914 sway bar reinforcement" Check with the welder. Should be able to insert insulation between tank and inner sheet metal to mig weld. Last edited by 911pcar; 08-28-2016 at 01:14 PM.. |

You can easily install the through body sway bar without removing the tank. I've done it several times. You can also weld in the reinforcement plates without removing the tank.
All 911's through at least 1989 have the stamping on the inner fenders to help locate the proper orientation: ![]() Drilled and sway bar being installed: ![]() All done: ![]()
