Re-chroming "Steelies"

Has anyone re-chromed steel wheels? I am thinking of purchasing some, but they have some rust issues, so they would need some work. Also, would I notice a performance loss compared to Fuchs?

I recently read an article in UpFixin (VII or VIII) that suggested to properly re-chrome steel wheels the rim and center need to be cut apart, chromed separately, and then welded back together.

I have no other knowledge - just passing on what I read.

As an alternative you can get a chrome powder coat rather than rechroming

Bolton Classic Wheels in California. I sent a set for my 356 to them. Re chrome, and widened to 5.5". Something like 125 per wheel. Good turnaround time.

$125/wheel for widening and chroming? That's pretty reasonable. I have a set of 5 early 911/912 4.5"steelies that I was going to sell...but now I think I'll set aside with the idea of having this done...

Some 8x17 and 11x17 steelies would be cool on a wide body car.

Chrome is over rated. Blast them, paint them, get some cool hub caps. Living on the coast and dealing with salt sucks.....
