A hot 1985 Targa!

Hi, folks. I'm new to Pelican (made my first purchase last week!) and new to Porsches.

I bought a 1985 targa and there is always a certain amount of heat coming into the cabin--even when I think I've turned everything off and have it set up for fresh air.

The heat seems to be coming (mostly) from the passenger-side vent (the little vent).

I have auto-heat on the floor between the seats that I have set to 'zero' and I think I have the dash controls set up correctly (but could use some guidance, please).

All I want is to get fresh air and no heat. (And, yes, I know I can get all the fresh air I want with the top off and the windows open--which is great! )

Any thoughts or guidance would be much appreciated.

Also, if it matters the car does have A/C (works poorly).

Thanks in advance for any help!

Lawrence

You will find lots of great posts on this issue if you do a search for cabin heat.

But basically it is one of three things:

1. Control rod to servo motor inside auto heat control box has popped off.
2. Flapper box on passenger side stuck open.
3. You don't understand how to use dash controls (see attached picture.)

You are probably going to wind up looking at the flapper boxes under the rear of the car, and connected to the front of the heat exchangers. The flaps are steel, and the pivots corrode. You can free them up or replace them, but you can also shut the by hand with very little fanfare, solving the immediate problem.

There is also supposed to be a helper spring to close them. Once they are twisted shut, do not try to turn the heat back on at the floor.
