Exclamation Jack Stand Under Body Position?

I've been researching for a long time on this board as well as rennlist for a appropriate position on the front of the body for a jack stand. I'm about to embark on some front suspension work. I've read many post about putting the stands in the corners behind the front wheels and on the newer cars 86+ there are actually pads there....I'm a little wary b/c there are ac lines running though that area and I don't want to disburb them.

Is this position below OK? Should the stand be placed across the body seam or right next to it parallel to the seam on one side or another. I know this topic has been covered a ton but I just want to make sure I get it right and not damage my car/myself.

If anyone has any other ideas pictures would help a lot!

thx!

Not sure about the structural integrity of the place you seem to have put the stand.

I use the front torsion bar covers. Works perfectly and its a position Wayne refers to in 101 Projects.

Time for turbo tie rods ?

I need to pull the control arms out for the suspension work so the front covers will not work this time.

You can also run a 2x4 across the front pan and use two jackstands on that instead......

I kept my car on jackstands similar to where you have them now, maybe more so on the pinch welds. It sat on there for 4 months and she was just fine.

Cool I'll just place the jack stands on the pinch welds/seam.

Thx!

There are sheet metal weld flanges along the frame members that you need to be careful not to crush if you are going to jack there. Ask me how I know. The jack points shown in your owner's manual will help you locate the right spots. The 2x4 support across the pan will distribute the weight and not cause denting but it will flex. A treated 4x4 on 6-ton jack stands should be more than sufficient to support the weight of the front of your car for any wrenching you will do. Make sure to block the rear wheels.

I know this does not address the orig question, but is an idea for anyone doing a project car and will often be jacking it up. This is something we have done on race cars as a matter of normal prep. Cut 1" tube in half 3" section and weld over tub seam at jack-stand points. Cut a slice of 3" tube and weld at jack point to use as jack receiver. I will try to include pics

That is a great way to go. It would be great to get pictures of the underbelly of the 911 and then people cold mark the actual places for jack placement. I've seen Will do it with a factory diagram but it always is clearer seeing real pics. I've make a mark where I'm going to place the jack stand in the front. Can quite make out the other side in the pick though.

Thx!

Somebody should post a diagram of all the good jack points...

(It isn't enough to post it once or even twice and expect it to be found on a search - it has to be posted each time.)

I apologize for bringing up a jack thread once again. I've spent a few hours searching the threads and I just was not crystal clear on the procedure....my qustions have been answered so we can now add this thread to the others.

Boba- Thanks for the belly pics...it is a lot easier to look at the underside of a porsche that way vs. crawling under my car.

boba's solution is best by a long margin, but many will not strip the entire chassis to do it...

On my 82 I have a/c lines that run along the driver's side front jack point - the curve of the body behind the front wheel.

It is nearly impossible to jack it up there without touching any of the lines! Wish the lines were routed differently.

you can also cut the same curve into the end of a 2x4 so you'll have a jack pad that fits well into the reinforced area...

use that gizmo on the left to accurately replicate the curve so you don't have to make successive approximations.
