Clutch cable adjustment no gap

I'm doing my first clutch cable adjustment w/ 101 Projects and Bentleys. I've reached a point of confusion. With the cable lock nuts loose, cable end disconnected, and stop bolt backed all the way out there is no gap between the position lever and release lever (see pic).

Is the return spring toast? Could I remove the positioning lever and rotate it back a notch then adjust the stop bolt to 1.2mm?

Thanks

Mike,

I'm pondering your photo, its been two years since I replaced my clutch and seriously messed with all that.
Unfortunately I'm remembering that this could be a sign that your clutch is worn out? How many miles on this clutch?

Try searching on clutch adjustment and John Walker I know I read threads with his input when I was having issues.

Edit: found what I was looking for, look at this thread Clutch gurus unite.. Clutch switch doesn't activate, no more adjustment.. read posts by "John Walker's Workshop" read through this has some good info on possible problems.

I've no idea how many miles are on the clutch (no service papers), but a good guess would be that it's original so ~100k. I'm adjusting because I've been getting a lot of clutch shudder and grinding under load.

I just found a post w/ the same problem, the suggestion was to pry back the release lever with a large screwdriver. I'll guess try that in the meantime.

I'm no expert, but you might need to investigate "is my clutch worn out".

Good luck.

It's a good possibility.

Having just realigned someone else's clutch, I remember that indexing it one spline was a SIGNIFICANT change, not something that would be adjusted out. It's quite clear which spline is the right one.

Can you get a screwdriver or something in there and pry them apart, to verify that everything is moving cleanly?

With much force I can pry the positioning lever back and set the cable to spec. But after depressing the clutch pedal, the lever readjusts and rests on the stop bolt like the spring isn't working properly. Prying the levers apart makes a squeaking/binding sound. The positioning lever seems like it's sticking. Maybe a cleaning of the cross-shaft and/or a new spring will fix this?

Generally if your return spring is spent, there will be broken springs evident while depressing the clutch. If your clutch was working ok and now has ended up grinding and shuddering etc. , at 100K , the clutch is probably going. You can remove and adjust the lever as you mentioned but at this point I believe the clutch is worn allowing the lever to bottom out.

there is a stop for the end of the long arm. if it's at the stop, and there is no clearance, like in the picture, the disc is down to the rivets.

what if the horseshoe spring hits the heater box before the long arm returns to its stop? this is a friends car, not mine.....really......really...not mine.
is this a problem?
i just adjusted mine the other night. i used a rope and pulled the brake pedal up to hold it, it helps in removing the cable from the long arm. i adjusted the big nut to where the cable was just about to put tension on the long arm, then adjusted the smaller bolt so it was just touching the short arm. it seems to have helped with the clutch chatter.
77 with backdated heater boxes
