DME, chip, engine questions on 3.2
 

I bought a 3.2 a few years ago to swap into my early car. I finally got around to swapping the car in, but I don't feel that I am getting the performance that I should. So I am trying to sort out what I have first as some have recommended .

First the serial # is 63E06074 and engine type is 930/20. Which is suppose to be a Euro engine.

I assume the car has been federalized because there was wireing present for a 02 sensor that a euro car would not have had.

As there are no numbers on the DME, can anyone tell from the pics what I have?
Also there is a Weltmeister TC-6000 24 pin chip installed. Are these any different from a euro or usa model.

Odd thing about that chip is that it is a 24 pin chip, but it looks like you have the space for the later model 28 pin chip.

My Euro '84 has no O2 sensor, or any simple way to wire it in. The plug to the ECU has nothing in that spot, and IIRC there's nothing on the male side either. Is that what the wire taped to the outside of the harness is?

I had the plugs coming from the harness for a 02 sensor. I have no idea if the 02 sensor I hooked up is actually doing anything. I have no idea what was done in the past. I was wondering if someone could tell from the DME.

You have a stock U.S. DME from an 84-85 Carrera. You can tell because the lower board has the factory circuitry for an O2 sensor. The European boxes don't have this. The wiring harness also looks like it's from a U.S. car, because the early Euro/ROW cars don't have those two brown wires coming out of the harness. The Weltmeister chip you have is for a standard U.S. O2 sensor'd 3.2. If everything is somewhat properly installed, the O2 sensor should be active.

So someone has switched this out at some time. What effect would this have?

It was either switched out for Federalization, or since you bought the engine package used, it the seller could have just put together an engine and harness/DME from another car. Either way, it just means you have the option to run closed loop with an o2 sensor or not.

Send the box to Steve. I had the 24 pin version in my first engine and he switched it to 28 chip. It ran much better, more power and even idled smoother. The difference was notable. My wife asked me: what happened to the car, why is it running better? This was as a passenger and someone who heard it all the time from inside the house. True story.

Have you used something to look for vacuum leaks? You can use carb cleaner, brake cleaner, a small methane torch, a smoke maker, etc. I don't think you have any, since you said it idles very smoothly. But it could cause a low power condition.

Paying for a little dyno time would tell you for certain, too.

What are those two brown wires for? My car has them too and I figured it was a previous owner "fix".

The brown wires are connected for California and Japan cars...retards timing by 3 degrees and leans out the part throttle fuel mixture.
