Missing Hand Throttle- '68 coupe
 

The entire hand throttle setup is missing from my car for some strange reason. Is this an easy thing to replace? I can't seem to find any parts listed for it, will I need to source this used? It sure is handy for warming up the car, as well as a rudimentary cruise control on long stretches of flat highway! If anybody has the parts I need, PM me. I did look down in the tunnel to see if had just fallen off down there, but no luck. Thanks!

Can't say for sure, but my '68 never had a hand throttle. When I asked my wrench about it one day, he said they didn't come with them, but with a few parts he could rig something up.

This was a while ago when the handles and such were easily found.

I don't get enough revs out of it to use it as a cruise control; maybe there's another way to hook it up so you can. But because the work was done by our dealership, I did have to sign a waiver stating I understood the dangers of "inappropriate use."

You're exactly right. The hand throttle started in '69.

That's bizarre. My other Porsche was a '68 911T Euro Sportomatic (converted to 901 eons ago), and it had one, I loved it! I wonder if someone added it along the way, I always thought it was supposed to be there. It was a December 1967 production date car, too. Thanks! This car seems to warm up more easily than the other one did with just a quick hold at 2500 rpm or so when dead cold, then it idles just fine. It's also stock, and my other one was not. Lots of differences, I guess!

I have a '68 911L Euro Sportomatic that had a hand throttle that I removed. P.M. me and I'll see if I can round up the parts.

My '68 911 (normal) USA did not come with a hand throttle.
That was one of the first mods I did when I saw it available on a '69 in late '68.

I just checked my '65-'68 paper parts manual and sure enough the parts are listed!
It is shown in all ilustrations; LHD, RHD, standard transmission and Sportomatic.

The book list the hand throttle parts for "911L, 911S and 911 (USA)"
When you look into the parts, it lists the non-hand throttle pivot bolt for the 911TU (RoW 911T). I recall having to source that hand throtle pivot bolt after I had all the other parts. I also ended up with an extra "adjustable stop" as one was already on the throttle rod. Sooo ... my car should have come with the hand throttle. It looks like the production line installed a 912/911TU part 902.424.051.00 instead of the correct 901.424.051.02 parking brake handle assembly. Well ... while they left that part off, when I ordered Koni shocks and sway bars Porsche included 911S vented brakes. :D

I don't recall the hand throttle as an option when I ordered the car but that was 42 years ago.

I've got a '68 normal Sporto USA which has the hand throttle and is original.
I also have a '68 normal 5-speed USA which has no hand throttle. I'm thinking the Sporto thing is key.

My '68 911 with November '67 build date also does not have it. I think you're right about it being a Sporto thing and I stand corrected.

Interesting stuff! On my old ex-sporto car, the handle at full "up" would hold exactly 4000rpm in 5th on a flat road- I think that was about 75 mph on the speedo, which worked out pretty well.

my '73 MFI car does not have one. I would love to put one in. Any one have a parts list, or and extra set of parts for sale?

This is one of the little ‘trivia points’ that we should try and clear up.

My parts manual pages for this are dated “VI 6/67”. Clearly Porsche intended to have the hand throttle on ’68 911 USA cars in addition to the 911L and 911S.

I guess the questions are:
Were any ’68 911 USA cars equipped with the hand throttle?
Were all ’68 Sportomatics equipped with the hand throttle?
Was the hand throttle listed as an option? Where?
If it was a 911 option, was also available on a 912?
Was it ever on a ’67 model?
Other?

I seem to recall an incompatibility with some earlier parking brake handle housings.

I’ll work on posting images of the parts manual exploded diagrams, part numbers and of the parts themselves.

My original Owner's Manual (W 336 e, dated X/67) does not list the operation of the hand throttle. The picture of the cockpit clearly shows the hand throttle but it isn't labled. My center tunnel carpet had the slit for the hand throttle handle.

My '68 USA "base" 911 has the hand throttle, but not sure if it was original. My car was originally a sporto also.

I use the hand throttle often!

As an aside, a 914-6 also has a hand throttle. Since it has a throttle cable
(not a rod) in the tunnel, the hand throttle uses a push rod that actuates
an extra piece on the throttle bell-crank at the pedal assembly. This
914-6-only bell-crank was also used with the (very rare) 914-6 Sportomatic.

Talk about timely. I just took a photo of this part in one of my cars earlier today and was going to post up asking what it was.

Just to add to the statistical information from 3 years ago, my car is a 68S targa non-sporto and I have the hand throttle. It looks like it came with the car. VIN is 0032, so it would have been made some time in late 67 (and it's got a 67 style mirror instead of the 68 breakway).
