Paint
86 carrera the front valence (chin spoiler attaches to it) and the removable rocker panel trims on each side are painted in a mottled type thick paint, Looks like chip guard paint, is this a factory paint job or was this done aftermarket. Will be sending both items out to be painted as the paint is flaking off the front valence. Probably going to have the same chip guard paint done to these but wondering if there was something different from the factory. I could see how it would get blasted easily if it was just straight paint like on the rest of the car or did they do something a little different than the straight paint or chip guard.

I'm not sure there's any better way to do it. I guess you could try to apply some clear bra material and see if if will conform to the pebbley surface, though I don't think so. I hear some painters will add a little flexible type activator to paint used on urethane bumpers. You might ask.

+1 for clear bra if you can smooth out the surface nice car - you ought to bring it to cars& coffee 2/15 in burlington http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/new-england-region-ma-me-nh-ct-and-ri/478803-boston-cars-and-coffee-breakfast-2-15-9-30-a.html

Thanks, I thought it might have been factory, thats what I will have put back on it. After all its 23 yrs old and just needs to be replaced, I'll stick with that. As for going to Burlington VT in Feb. forget it. Won't be taking it out until April and would be interested in rides after that time.

I repainted mine and just cleaned up the paint and went right over the original texture but first used some bulldog adhesion promoter to keep it from flaking off, this promoter can be purchased in clear or black and will make paint stick to anything.

I am going to put a new chin spoiler on it also as the old one looks a bit ratty but probably because the valence has some small dents in it that distorted it. As for a price its going to be free as a very good friend of mine who restores corvettes and street rods is going to do it, I help him out when he needs to lift restored corvette bodies back onto the chassis and a few other odds and ends. I just pay for the paint, does any one know what type of paint they used for the stone guard or does it matter. Porsche as opposed to american car paint. Like he says black is black.

Hi Janz,
Yep that is factory as others have stated. Porsche uses a light beige color texture coat and then paints over it. WURTH makes an excellent product that matches the texture of the original. SKS undercoat is what you want. If the bodyshop is going to do it ask if they have or use Wurth products. Shops will have a special gun to load up bottles of the SKS so they can spray it. Alternatively you can buy it in "Convinience" rattle cans. I use these for minor repairs. The rattle cans work well but take some practice to get the texture correct. I recenly re-sprayed parts of my engine bay. ![]() ![]() I have also used it for spot repair on the 993. ![]() Make sure that the B.S. lets the undercoat air dry for a few days before primer and paint...otherwise you will have shrinkage issues. Also verify that they will use a urethane clear NOT an Acrylic. Acrylic will be too brittle and you will get tons of stone chips. Adding a flex agent to the clear would be a good idea as Milt suggested. Putting Clear Bra over the texture coat will work but look funky. (I install clear bras for a living). Take care, Cooper

You have a black 86 Carrera as I do, The black is a off the shelf black, no mixing its just black, You have a great looking car there! These are single stage paints too:

Hammerhead sorry about the Burlington VT thing, living out in the western end of the state Burlington to me is straight up rt 91. There are some great white knuckle roads out this way. Sometime you may want to try rt 116 west from rt 5 or rt 91 and up to Conway and beyond, a great drive through the Berkshire Mts.

A body shop in Denver that specializes in German cars told me that black is rarely just black - and that Porsche black contains some brown in it.

That may very well be. For the valence and rockers with the stone guard plain old black will do very nicely, fortunately the paint on the rest of the car is still very good.
Then again if I were to have the car painted I would go by the paint code which should give the correct mixing for the Porsche black. |
