synthetic oil 911 3.2

buying a well maintnenaced 1985 carrera 145K mile has been using regular oil. Motor does not leak a drop. I want to switch to 15/50 mobil one, good idea? Leaking problems after changing to synthetics? Anyone with experience about this issue?? Thank you JL

Well there captain, it has been discussed, re-discussed and discussed some more. Search for "the ultimate oil thread" and read on. Oh yeah, get comfy and a healthy dose of caffeine before digging into it.

Captain, when I purchased my 1987 3.2 Targa I had asked the same question and of course had fifty different answers. All replies were taken into consideration but I still changed over to Mobil 1 15w-50 it has been three months now and I have yet to see a drop of oil or over consumtion from my engine, maybe just lucky!

Don't think it has to do with consumption, it has to do with cam lobe wear, and lack of high load additives. So think of this in a couple of years, when you go to do that valve adjustment and your cam lobes are pitted.

Short answer is that today's Mobil 1 is quite different than the blend we all used to use. No longer works as well for an air-cooled 911.

But did your oil consumption improve or stay the same?

My car started smoking, oil poured out of every oriface, and then my cams disintegrated. That was just the 1st hour...

I was going to open up ANOTHER OIL THREAD, but since we're already on the subject...

When I bought my '88, the PO suggested that Mobil oil for air-cooled V-twins (basically, Harley oil) would work best for the air-cooled 911. Being a former Harley owner, this sounded plausible. I think he suggested 20-50, or something like that.

OK, there's the can-o-worms. Anybody want to open it further?

kidrock out.

No answers?

Please don't make me open up another oil thread...I don't think I could take the abuse.

I believe that Charles Navarro also agrees that the 20-50 Harley oil has the necessary zddp to protect the cams in our air cooled engines. Air cooling is not the common denominator, zddp is.

a/You're asking why there are "no answers," b/you're asking who Charles Navarro is. We don't forgive your ignorance. DO A SEARCH.

Thanks for the link Tony. FWIW, I did do an earlier search on oil but was unable to find this particularly informative thread. I didn't expect to be treated so rudely, though.

I'm another Motorcycle oil user: Mobil 1 MXT 10w-40.

Oil experts said it was good to use and I wanted to run an oil for all seasons.
I changed oil once last year and put over 7,000 miles on it.
According to oil analysis it was fine.

Don't go to synthetic! Earlier motors just aren't exactly right for the stuff in my opinion. There's a better argument for using Shell Rotella to keep it sealed and protected. Never break a rebuilt motor in on synthetic or chance switching from dino unless you have a drip pan...

To his original question, switch to Brad Penn Racing semi-synthetic. Perfect for our motors and if it's not local Charles N. has it for sale from his site, LN Engineering.

And it's green...
