Clown College 3.2, new problem!

Hello Porsche Folks,

I've had a couple of months where I was unable to work on the 76 Targa. I'm
in the process of getting the 3.2 to run. Several weeks ago, I re-dropped the engine
to replace the speed sensor and extend the four wire DME plug at the back of the
engine. I put the engine in last Saterday, but she was not getting any spark, the
the fuel pump ran ok. I examined the DME relay and determined that one of the coiled switches was not working. I ordered two new relays from our Host. Did I tell
every one that this is forth time that I've dropped engine. Anyway, I replaced the
relay and she still would not start. I had one of my Cockers turn the engine over
while I looked for spark on my test spark plug. Actually, my Cockers were to bussy,
so I had my fourteen year old turn her over. No spark, until the starter was disingaged, and then I saw the spark. So I spun her over getting sufficient angular
momentum and she started. She sounds a little rough but the fuel is old. I'll put fresh
gas in her and see if runs better. The only thing I can think of is I have a bad ignition
switch. Has anybody experianced this problem?
I know you Guys want to excomunicate me from your forum, because of lack of
pictures. I'll rectify this on my next posting. Any Ideas would be appreciated.

Sorry know help but I do love the Clown College stuff.

Pretty sure you just have a wiring issue. Although I have read that the ignition switches carry a ton of current and are prone to....having problems.

Maybe look at the wiring on the switch and see if you can rig up a Hot Wire until you can eliminate other possibilities?

I had the same problem when I installed the Motronic DME for my conversion, it turned out I had hooked up the black wire off the Motronic wiring harness to a fuse that lost power when the key was cranked, this wire powers the coil so you get no spark.
Find that wire on your fuse box and put a test light or volt meter on it and crank the
motor, you'll probably find voltage drops to zero.

Good Luck.

This was an issue for me, too. Steve Wong, I believe pointed it out for me.
Test light and a helper to crank is all it took.

Gary, Doug, You Guys where correct. I tested the wire connection to the fuse and the voltage
dropped to almost zero. I connected to a different fuse and now she starts with the starter. She
still runs poorly, but I'll figure these problems out. It made total sense when I read your comments. But I would have had problems trying to figure this one out on my own. You Guys are the best and the Cockers say thanks as well.

Very disappointing Clown College I must say :-)

Glad you figured it out relatively painlessly!

Erik, sorry about the Clown College. Will do better next time!
