carrera cooling fan questions

Folks,

Got a couple of questions pertaining to an 85 carrera.

1. According to this tech article, the heater blower motor turns on to blow air across the heat exchangers when the oil reaches a certain tempature. Does anyone know this temperature?

http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_extra_cooling/911_extra_cooling.htm

2. I'm sure people have added a cooling fan to the oil cooler in the front. Where did you buy the fan?

3. Has anyone installed a cooling fan on the condenser on the engine lid? I know this may seem overkill, but in texas heat of 105, I need all the A/C cooling I can get. Especially when the car is just idling.

Thanks
David

pelican or elephant racing sell the cooling fans for the oil cooler. It would probably work better on your A/C if you went with the front condensor. Try Rennaire. The more heat you can take out of the engine compartment the better.

1. I have no idea

2. Oil cooler fans were standard equipment starting in 87. You can either buy OEM from Pelican or aftermarket. Elephant Racing sells an aftermerket fan, not sure if its available thru PP or not. You might also try the classifieds.

3. Several people on the board have added fans to the rear condensor with good results. You can't search on AC but a search on condensor should turn up several threads. Rennaire and Griffiths websites are good places to find info on AC upgrades.

Heater fan mentioned in the article is totally different from the fan on the external oil cooler in the front fender.

Oil cooler fan is 245 or 250. Heater blower is whenever you pull the heater lever.

well according the link above, i guess the heater blower motor also turns on at a certain temp:

Beginning with the 1984 Carrera, to provide additional engine cooling, Porsche added a complex control unit for the heater blower located in the engine bay. When the engine oil temperature is high, and the car is stopped, the control unit switches on the heater blower to get some extra cooling by blowing air through the heat exchangers. Because the heater valves are open, this hot air is simply vented into the atmosphere.

It may well be written down someplace. But ...

Why would blowing air through the heat exchangers provide additional engine cooling? If anything, air moved by the heater blower is not available for engine cooling, as the heater blower gets its air from the downstream side of the big engine fan.

No idea when it would turn on automatically - mine never has.
