911 flickering lights

Hello and Helpppp. My 84 911 widebody has a lighting problem. The headlights and dash lights flicker simultaneuosly. I don't know where to begin to look?? Could I be lucky enough that it is the on/off dimmer switch? I can't visualize that would make the headlights blink also. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Not being there - Just a wild guess.

You may have a ground connection loose or a loose feed into the light switch. I would start there.

No problem with the engine cutting out?

flickering lights

No engine problems and every other aspect of car is normal. Where do I check loose ground connection at? Battery I know is tight. The second possibility you mentioned,do you mean to check where the wire clips onto the back of the light switch? Thanks

That's a non-turbo right?

There are about 9 or so ground connections throughout the car. Look around on the left side inside the trunk. Brown wires connected to the body should have clean connections and be tight. Ground connections to the headlights and dash lights should also be clean and tight. As far as the light switch, look from under the dash to see if you can see the connections - these should not be corroded and should be tight.

Do you have a service manual? If not, you may want to pick up a Bentley Service Manual for the 84-89 Carrera's and Wayne's book.

Thanks for the tips

I will check out what you described. Yes, I do have the 84-89 service book.

I would put a volt meter on your battery while the car is running. Hold it there for a while and see if you are getting voltage spikes. This could be the sign of an alternator going south.

I had similar symptoms and ended up needing a new alternator.

+1 for what Young Man Neri said.
