Can you identify this part?

Hello all.

I was in the process of prepping my car to replace the seals and rubber on the doors of my 1987 Carrera Targa. After removing the door trim from the inside and outside of the window glass as well the flt backed channel rubber on both sides of the door, I notices a dry rotted piece of rubber molding on the outside of the window below the squeegee. This piece appears to be a felt backed rubber seal of some type that was clipped to the inside of the door by several metal clips that pivot.

Please forgive the grainy picture - camera phone was all I had available to me today.

I have checked the parts diagram and searched the forums, but cannot locate this piece for my 1987 Targa. So, I have decided to tap into the collective knowledge and experience of the forum. Does anyone have an idea what this piece is and preferably the part number? I really need to replace it and am afraid the clips could scratch my window glass.

-D

Can't really tell from the image you posted. It could be the inner seal - part # 911 531 951 01

Not sure though.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I apologize for the terrible photo. It is difficult enough to get a clear photo of the inside of a door with a decent camera, much less a camera phone.

The seal that I am looking for attached via riveted metal clips (that pivot) and are mounted beneath the rubber squeegee on the outside of the glass.

The closest thing I have found in the catalog is this part:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/smart/more_info.cgi?pn=901-531-935-20-M260&catalog_description=Door%20Glass%20Felt%20Brush%20 with%20Clips%20(Upper%20Door%20Edge)%2C%20Left%20I nner%2C%20911%2F912%20Targa%20(1965-83)%2C%20911%2F912%20Coupe%20(1965-91)

However, it is not listed as compatible with my 1987 Targa.

When I use that part # with dashes between the #'s I get the following. Still not sure if that's it.

911-531-951-01-M260
Door Slot Seal, left or right, 911/912 (1965-89), Coupe, Targa, Cabriolet [More Info]
Brand: OEM

Those are the clips for what used to be the door glass felt brush strip or "fuzzy" strip, the strip has deteriorated and the clips left behind...

Thanks for your help in this, Rich and Pozee.

After looking closer into the issue today, I agree that this is what remains of a felt strip that installed inside the door. In fact, I popped the clips out this afternoon to verify that assumption

Any idea if the part numbers 901-531-936-20 and 901-531-935-20 linked are the correct replacement for my Targa? The description for the parts specify compatibility with 911/912 Targa (1965-83) and 911/912 Coupe (1965-91). My Targa is a 1987 and I saw no similar part for my model year

your thoughts?

If you're sure that's the felt seal, then the part numbers for 84-89 Targa & Cab are as follows:

Left - 911-531-295-40
Right - 911-531-296-40

Thanks, Pozee. $130 for one side? Wow that is expensive.

I don't think that is the part you are looking for.

The felt pieces with clips are $19 a side.

Here is the link to the page on Pelican:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/POR_911M_BDYsl3_pg2.htm

You should be able to pry out the old clips with a small flat head screw driver. Make sure you have a grip on the clip with some needle-nose pliers to keep them from falling in the door.

You can get the felt in there by pressing in the clip with the flat side of the screwdriver(rather than py, you use it to press). Be careful not to scratch the glass or paint.

Thanks, Casey.

But, unfortunately, I think Pozee is correct. The cheaper part that you linked to is for 911 Targa & Cabriolet (1965-1983) and 911 Coupe (1965-91). My targa is a 1987 and the more expensive part specifies compatibility with the Targa 911 (1984-1998)

Judging from the product shots on Pelican, the two parts appear very similar. But, there are apparently differences between the parts or hos the parts mount inside the door. Trust me, judging from the difference in price, I wish it were otherwise.

Can anyone confirm that 911-531-295-40 is interchangeable with 901-531-935-20? If so, I will gladly order the cheaper part

Thi picture you showed looks exactly like what my felt piece looked like when I replaced it on my 1980.

I understand what you are saying on the part listing. I just can't see such a similar part going up that much. Something's not right.

I've looked in my factory manuals but they don't cover the subject. $130 just is too much for that. no way.

I can;t imagine that part costing so much, when I replaced mine I had to loosen the window frame to be able to get it in there. also the area where the button clips go in tends to rust a bit so now is a good time to get in there and clean and touch up.

Well, I received word from Pelican and they confirmed that the parts are not interchangeable. and that the more expensive part is correct for my Targa.

We can now consider this case closed.

Thanks for your help.
