Transmission Numbers
 

I have two transmissions. Can someone tell me what model they are and possibly from which car they would have been in?

A. 915.301.311.2R
B. 911.301.311.0R

Any pros / cons for each of these trannys would be appreciated!

I'm pretty sure that what you've posted are casting numbers which aren't used for ID purposes. Turn the units over and you'll find a number on the bottom of the diff housing that reads something like 915/61, 915/63, 915/68 or similar. If you find just a serial number post that.

I actually had found the casting numbers at first. The numbers I have posted are from the bottom of the trannys at the differential. If these aren't the numbers then I will have a problem because there aren't any more numbers to be found.

I googled the numbers and found a 915 part onsale on ebay. So it is safe to say the 915.301.311.2R is a part from a 915. I will have to make a trip out to that tranny to take pictures and possibly find that other number you mentioned. I assume that number would give me the model year? How much should a rebuilt/refurbished stock 915 tranny go for?

Doesn't the 911 prefix denote a "pusher clutch" 901 design trans?

I do not know what this means. Is it good or bad?

'70s & '71s used a variation of the earlier 901 transmission. These are often referred to as a “pusher clutch” trans because of the differences in the clutch actuation. Cases are very different so side to side comparo would be obvious.

The 911 in this instance is generally used to identify mag case 2.2 liter transmissions that use the first "pull-type" clutches. Clutches before 1970 all used a "push-type" clutch, which means that the throw out bearing was pushed against the pressure plate to release the clutch.

The other one had no stamp like above just this number: 310201438/12. I could not find any number of a "9##/##" format on it! I flipped it, turned etc. Nothing.

The one 31020......... is probably from an Audi or 924. I think. NOT any 911.

The 911/01 7106390 is a '70 911 5-speed.

It must be out of a 924 then because there was a "Porsche" stamp on the case...unless Audi used Porsche tranny back then. Well, I guess I won't be using that tranny in my car.

The 924 actually started life as a Porsche designed Audi GT. When Audi (VW) decided to drop the project, Porsche ‘bought’ the design back. The 924 is full of components with Audi trade marks. If this piece says “Porsche”, it may be from the 944 - which the 924 morphed into. :D

At least you got a 911 transmission out of the ‘deal’. Keep in mind that this 911/01 only fits the '70 & '71 911. Any other application requires some serious 'fiddeling'.

That second "mystery" box is from a 924 turbo. We call it the "snail" box. It shares a number of 915 components. It's a relatively rare box because they just didn't make that many of the turbo cars. Certain of the parts that are specific to that gearbox are very expensive to acquire. If you throw it on Ebay you'll get at least a few hundred dollars for it, probably from someone who owns or races 924t's who needs rebuild parts.
