930 caliper rebuild -alternative sources and cross-reference parts?

I have a set of 930 calipers (917 style) that I am slowly bringing back from the dead. I managed to free the stuck pistons but fried the wiper seals and dust boots (what was left) with the torch. Of course, the plan was to use new seals.

Now a single caliper rebuild kit for a front 930 is approximately $85 from our host. Ouch. Thats a lot of money for 4 seals and 4 dust boots.

Does anyone know? A pair or early M rear calipers has a 38mm piston. The front 930s have 4 38mm pistons. Are the seals and boots the same? Are they close enough to fit? This route would be $26/caliper. I suppose I should order up a set and see if they fit. HMM I might have a set of the shelf.

Any way to avoid the $58 each for cross-over tubes? This getting really expensive - as usual.

Thanks for entertaining my thoughts.

the boots are not the same on the m calipers you still need the scraper rings even if the seals work...all brembos use the scrapers not boots

Hey buddy

Have you called VCI? They seem to be really good guys with good service. Maybe give them a call and see what they think.

Good luck!

Jamie,

You should contact Zuffenhaus. I know they are making a 917 caliper now. In speaking with Keith, he said that their specs matched the factory so that they could also provide replacement parts for original calipers. He might only have newer speced parts and I'm not saying to go to him for parts and compete with Pelican. He definately can help you with some of your rebuild questions though.

Give him a call/PM. eimkeith is his name on the BB.

Thanks guys. The question is not about availability, its more of cost. Simple rubber parts should not be so expensive when injection molding is cheap. I guess its just economy of scale and the Porsche tax.

Yes, I am watching for the results of the Zuffenhaus brakes. HMM I owe Bob a call.

Jamie,

I rebuild and restore a lot of the 930 calipers for customers. Brother I feel your pain when it comes to the cost on rebuild parts. In the past I have bent my own cross over tubes from a piece of straight line. It takes some time to get the curves right but saves you about $50 per line. Also I have sourced the rear scraper seals at a much more affordable price than the Brembo ones. The front scraper seals are a very oddball size on the OD so I have not found those yet. As for the internal pressure seals I would suggest using the Brembo ones as they are about only $3 each. Here is a pic of the last set I did just to keep you motivated on the project. They came to me in very very nasty shape and had that crappy red "caliper paint" all over them. The paint had trapped moisture under it and led to some corrosion but they turned out pretty good in the end.

I was just looking at the cost of doing this and nearly had an aneurysm when i saw the parts prices. I'll be watching this thread.

Can someone do me a favor and let me know the demensions of a 930 caliper? I'm trying to come up with a Wilwood solution that will still fit under my 15s.

Thanks a bunch.
