Water from exhaust?

Hey all -

Just started up my 84 911 for the 2nd time in the last month or so (boy, do I hate the salt covered roads around here...) and noticed that I had some water exiting the exhaust as it warmed up. Dried up in about 5 minutes - but curious what that was? Condensation somewhere?

This is an air cooled car after all.....

Water is just a by product of combustion.
When the spent gasses contact cold metal in the exhaust system water vapor is condensed and that should be the water you are seeing.

Amazing how much water comes out, esp. when air temps are so low.

Hey jcs, I live in florida and the temp has gone into the 40's for the last few nights. I went to start the P car and also had water spitting out from the tail pipe, so I guess it is the cool weather.

this is one reason why you should avoid driving the car on short trips - when you stop the water settles in to the lowest points and corrosion begins

driving for 30 minutes ensures the exhaust and other vehicle parts are nice and hot, so the water is vaporized and blown out

Good advice on the short drives --- now I have to debate letting my car sit until the roads are REALLY clear or just take a nice long drive tomorrow and hosing down the undercarriage.

I let mine sit durring storage without short term start ups, the condensation is unreal, it will rot out the exhaust very quickly, and end up in the oil. I hate to let it sit for 3-4 months but I think it's best overall, unless when you start it you can get out and really run it for a fair amont of time, tough to do but I force myself.
