New H4's and ran into a gremlin

I just installed one new H4 with a 55w Bulb on my 82 911SC and my passenger side light is very dim and I have no hi-beams. I only did the Passenger side. I then took off the H4 and put the old light back on and I get the same results; dim low beam and no hi-beam. The drivers side is fine but no hi-beam. I did notice that before I put the H4 on the connector was a little brittle and falling apart so i put some electrical tape around it to keep it from falling apart.

Anybody know what is wrong here?

sounds like a voltage drop. you should consider using relay's (www.danielsternlighting.com) to deliver 12v directly to the bulb so that you don't have voltage dropping between the stock harness and the bulb.

I would confirm that your ground is OK. Maybe buggered up the connector so the conductor is making poor contact. Other than that, tough to say without a meter or looking at it.

If your connector is breaking apart, I might suggest sourcing another. Any H4 type connector like on your sealed beams will work. That means almost any vehicle older than 20 years would make a valid donor.

Good luck.

OK, maybe disregard that last bit about being able to use any socket from a sealed beam application and it should fit your H4s. I have always been able to use H4 bulbs on converting vehicles to sealed beam replacement that use H4 bulbs, so I assumed it would work.

I just ran across this little bit of information that made me second guess my advice. Don't want to steer you in the wrong direction or anything. This was from the rallylights.com website. They have all sorts of automotive lighting gizmos there.

Check your fuses and your relays. Replace any wires, etc that are crispy or don't look quite right. Check for volts as well.

Ok. Got the issue with no hi beams resolved. It was in the stalk. Finally got one H4 on and it wants to pop off the lip that surrounds the headlight opening. Any fixes for that?

On the other, the nut that the screw goues into is stripped so I JB Weld'd a nut behind the one that was stripped. Hope it works.
