Carb Conversion
I have a 79 SC and I'm doing a carb conversion. The CIS is off and I was just wondering if there is anything threads on here that can tell me what Wiring I need to keep and what I don't. I can probably chase it around myself, but if there is data on here, it would make it go alot quicker for me. I was wondering too, do I need to go to a MSD type ignition or can i use what I have already. By chasing wires it looks to me i should be able to keep what I have now, and it should work fine. Thanks, anymore info on this conversion would be greatly appreciated.

You can retain the stock ignition if you wish but carbureted cars run MUCH better with an MSD and matching coil.

You can eliminate virtually all of the stock wiring harness, almost all of which is devoted to the CIS and the ECU. there are a couple of sensor--pressure, temp--wires that will continue to feed instruments, but ultimately you'll end up with those and the starter/alternator wires.

ECU?? on an SC?
- there will be wires to some CIS components, but why bother getting rid of them? Lots of work and nil wt. savings. |

ps - search on "msd" for many threads and pics of exactly how to install

Well, I generally, probably carelessly, refer to any computer box that controls engine functions, like the box under the passenger seat, as an "ECU"--engine control unit. I think most Porsche people call it the DME box? That's confusing to me as a pilot, since an aviation DME is an electronic box properly called distance-measuring equipment.
