Oil level sender testing (out of tank)

When I removed my sender unit I found it tangled into a dipstick (quite common from what I've read). So now I wonder if the high pegged level needle was linked to a faulty unit or due to the tangled dipstick. Any easy was of testing or should I just replace it (after 23 years of use) ?

I just replaced mine a few years ago instead of trying to fix the readings,

with a couple of jumper wires, connect the ground and signal wires in the fender to the sender, turn on the ignition and move the sender up and down as you watch the gauge.

I replaced mine two weeks ago. if the level is pegged then you have an open somewhere, my guess is in the windings of the sending unit. These things live / work in a pretty harsh environment with the heat and vibration. Notice the winding where it was chewed through by the float arm.
