spark plug size and compression test
 

quick question folks. what's the size of the spark plug? I need to buy one of the spark plug sockets.

also, how do you go about doing the compression test with these deep spark plug holes. i'd imagine it would be difficult to get the spark plug nut in and out of the deep hole...

I think it is a 13/16th but do not quote me on that. :confused: Most will recommend the factory tool. I am looking for one myself. Once you drop a plug in there you will under stand. I think it only took me 45 minutes to get mine out.:mad:

There is a thread on this subject and is very funny once it happens to you and you can admit it. Sort of a right of passage with these cars.:D

I found an extension tube for the compression tester that is made for motorcycles with twin overhead cams. They have deep wells also. That worked good for me and was inexpensive.

bump....can we get a confirmation on the spark plug size? i know its a stupid question, but i don't wanna order the wrong socket....

13/16th" 'Merican, fits better than 21mm.

You'll see why everyone likes the factory tool when you get to do the last...f r e a k i n g.........o n e......

Any quality plug socket will hold a plug while you fish around for the hole, but only zah factory tool vill be exactly zee correct length to get the last frickin' plug in or out.

21mm is the factory tool size....and steveinTO is correct, theres no tool better then the factory one, ive tried all others

where can i find the factory tool? i don't see it listed here on pelican...

I wish my factory tool worked as well as some others...it appears to have been untouched for almost 30 years, and the rubber gasket is the ONLY piece of rubber on my car that has not shrunk, because I cannot, even with force, get it on the plugs when they're in the car. Just too tight. I can use it to put them in, but I cannot use it to remove them.

Find the 911 spark plug socket at a Porsche flea market or e-bay. There's a solid one and a u-joint one. Both work equally well on my '82, but I suppose the u-joint model has more adaptability.

Or...tape a 13/16" socket to a 5" 3/8" drive extension. You probably need to chase down a snap on truck to find the 5" extension.

Another option is a Hazet tool, but they are getting $pendy...
