so what does the majority of folks prefer when putting in new carpet? the cheaper domestic cut pile or the slivernit?

A lot depends on the individual's budget. Silverknit (Sp?) is pretty pricey. It's beautiful stuff though, and a lot of people prefer it. Actually I made a carpet for my car using a tight weave loop carpet material I bought through an upholstery supply place that I like much better than cut pile.

My personal choice is for luxury: sliverknit, for covering up the floor: perlon felt. I don't like the domestic cut pile.

+1 on sliverknit...Just a little more expensive on the outset, but well worth it. I wound up redoing my wife's 911 with the sliverknit, never seen a more beautiful carpet. Topped it off with a set of nice coco mats from http://www.cocomats.com/
Finished result is a beautiful (and practical) interior.

I bought a few meters of carpet used in BMW's at a fraction of the price...cut the pieces out and had a local guy saw the edges up...$300aud ( $200usd ) all done...fits perfect and look's a treat!

remember
Porsche used the slivernit because it has an elastic backing and is very moldable. Door pockets and rear seat sides are tough and slivernit makes them easy.
